Ty Pennington may be the face of “Rock the Block,” but that doesn’t mean he’s able to sit back quietly while bold design choices unfold in front of him.
In fact, the longtime TV personality recently admitted that one of the toughest parts of hosting the hit HGTV competition isn’t the schedule or the pressure—it’s holding back his own opinions.
Pennington opened up during a recent interview with PauseRewind.
Pennington Said It’s Hard to Hold Back His Opinions
“Every season, I go in, and of course, I’m like, ‘Are you guys sure you wanna–?’” Pennington shared.
He explained that he often finds himself wanting to pull contestants aside to offer guidance, adding, “‘Hey, can we talk on the side for a second?’ I’ll just be like, ‘Look, I’ve tried what you’re trying… is there another option?’”
But the reality of the show quickly sets in.
With tight deadlines and high stakes, contestants don’t always have the flexibility to pivot. Even when Pennington offers input, it’s not always taken.
“There are other times that… I’ve walked in and said, ‘Hey guys, this looks a little empty. I think something needs to be there,’” he said.
Still, he’s learned that what might initially seem like a mistake can turn out to be a deliberate creative risk.
In one instance, a team intentionally left space open—something he questioned at first but later came to respect.
That moment shifted his perspective on his role as host.
“That made me realize, maybe I should shut up and let them do their thing,” Pennington admitted. “Because I realized we all got our own artistic sort of statements… sometimes it’s great to just let someone find their path.”
It’s a notable realization for someone with as much hands-on experience as Pennington, who built his reputation on transformation shows like “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
On “Rock the Block,” however, his role is more about guiding the audience than guiding the designers.
Pennington Is Open to Being on ‘Rock the Block’
Of course, that hasn’t stopped fans from wondering whether he might one day step out from behind the hosting role and into the competition itself.
Pennington hasn’t ruled it out—but he’s also aware it could be a risky move.
“At some point, I will even have to compete,” he said. “But I really hope it doesn’t come down to it because I’m way too competitive. And I cheat. That’s probably why they’ve never asked me.”
The comment was clearly made in jest, but it highlights just how seriously he takes the craft.
Since joining “Rock the Block” in its second season, Pennington has become a staple of the series, which is now in its seventh season.
