Was ‘Renovation Aloha’ Canceled? HGTV Stars Kamohai & Tristyn Kalama Respond

Is “Renovation Aloha” canceled? Kamohai and Tristyn Kalama addressed rumors that HGTV canceled their show following a recent controversy.

Was ‘Renovation Aloha’ Canceled?

During an April 29 Instagram Live, the Kalamas discussed season 3 episode 5 of “Renovation Aloha.”

As the video was wrapping up, Tristyn took a moment to address the rumors circulating that “Renovation Aloha” had been canceled.

“You guys, people are saying, ‘Oh I see that your show is canceled,'” she said. “Our show is not canceled.”

Kamohai explained, “Not even close.”

Tristyn added, “So go tell everyone you know that that’s absurdity. That’s AI being stupid.”

“No, our show is not canceled,” she shared. “Episodes air every Tuesday.”

Earlier in their Instagram Live session, the couple discussed that they film year round and are renovating 6 to 7 houses at a time.

“Your guys’ support means everything,” Kamohai said of fans tuning in to watch “Renovation Aloha.”

During season 3, episode 3 of “Renovation Aloha,” the couple discovered human remains at a Hawai’i property.

The state claimed that they didn’t get permission to film the remains and, according to Honolulu Civic Beat, the Hawai’i Attorney General’s Office won a restraining order from a state judge to have the content taken down.

HGTV later removed the episode and re-edited it. “We take the concerns raised by the Native Hawaiian community very seriously and are committed to ensuring our programming is respectful and appropriate,” a statement from Lynne Davis Adeyemi, vice president of communications for Warner Bros. Discovery, read.

“We apologize to anyone who found any part of the episode offensive, as that was not HGTV’s intention,” the statement added.

During an April 16 Instagram Live video, Kamohai and Tristyn explained how they followed the proper steps upon making the discovery in a lava tube.

“The careful consideration of going through this episode — for us, nothing means more to us than our family, our culture, and our history and heritage,” Kamohai shared.

“And the land that we are honored to call home,” he said, adding that they have “the utmost respect for all of it. It all means so much to us.”

They explained that they notified the police “immediately” and contacted Kamohai’s father. “He knows exactly what to do in those situations,” the HGTV star noted.

Tristyn shared, “The police archeologists said just leave the bones, they didn’t need to do anything further at that time.”

Kamohai added, “We were put in touch with our kūpuna that know the proper protocol for a situation like that.”

He assured, “This was something we would never build on. Now it was about, what is the proper cultural protocol?”

Kamohai and Tristyn followed the guidance to “protect in place” and put up a fence to ensure the property’s protection.

“That property will remain that way in perpetuity which will ensure that no one ever gets to build on that site and it will remain that way forever. For us, that was most important,” Kamohai noted.
