Actress Zooey Deschanel and HGTV star Jonathan Scott have proved that even storybook celebrity romances can start with some awkwardness. On an episode of “Call Her Daddy,” Deschanel recalled a funny misunderstanding from their first date. When Scott told her he wanted to show her a renovation project of his, she got excited about what that might mean. “And I was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to try to kiss me,'” she said.
However, things didn’t go as expected. “Then he didn’t, because he’s just a nerd who’s trying to show me a house,” she laughed. “I thought we were vibing.” Although Deschanel misread Scott’s intentions that first night, she shared that their first kiss did indeed happen on date two. Since then, the pair have built a loving union.
The Couple Met While Filming in 2019
GettyDeschanel and Scott first met back in 2019 while filming an episode of “Carpool Karaoke: The Series.” At the time, the actress wasn’t looking for love. “I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll flirt with him. He’s fun,'” she said of her first thoughts about Scott. She revealed that a big factor in her mindset was the status of her marriage to Jacob Pechenik.
“I was going through a divorce that was kind of under wraps because [of] our kids,” Deschanel admitted. She and Pechenik share two children, Elsie and Charlie, who have since built a bond with Scott. Despite not being in the market for romance, Deschanel clearly found that with Scott. “We’ve been inseparable ever since,” she said of their relationship’s evolution. “He’s the nicest person.”

GettyIn 2023, the pair delighted fans by taking their relationship to the next level. In August of that year, they took to Instagram to share the happy news of their engagement. Scott & Deschanel were all smiles in the photo, which they captioned: “Forever starts now!”
The post garnered over 2 million likes, making it clear that fans are loving the idea of these two stars walking down the aisle. “May you feel the joy and respect each other forever,” one fan wrote. Although no wedding date has been confirmed as of this writing, Deschanel did reveal in her 2025 “Call Her Daddy” interview that plans for the big day are well underway.
