After Paul Feig’s thriller “The Housemaid” garnered impressive numbers at the box office, Lionsgate officially greenlit a sequel to the Freida McFadden adaptation. Feig will return to direct the film, “The Housemaid’s Secret,” which enters production this year. Sydney Sweeney, who stars as the series’ troubled protagonist Millie Calloway, is also set to return along with Michele Morrone, who plays Enzo, a mysterious groundskeeper.
No official release date has been set for “The Housemaid’s Secret.”
Amanda Seyfried Teased the Sequel
Amanda Seyfried, who plays Millie’s boss, the chaotic housewife Nina Winchester, nearly confirmed the sequel before Lionsgate’s official announcement. Critics have praised Seyfried’s performance in “The Housemaid.”
“No one’s said anything about number two, but I guarantee there will be number two,” said Seyfried to Variety at the 37th Annual Palm Springs International Film Awards. The “Mean Girls” alum won the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her performance in “The Testament of Ann Lee.”
“And I can almost guarantee that I’m gonna be some small cameo in [‘The Housemaid’s Secret’],” she continued. She explained that “The Housemaid’s Secret” focuses on Millie joining a new family and that “so much happens” with Morrone’s character, Enzo.
“I really want to see how she keeps Nina Winchester in her pocket because I will jump the [expletive] back into that,” finished Seyfried.
‘The Housemaid’ Performed Well at the Box Office
“The Housemaid” opened to over $19 million in its first weekend, eventually pulling in over $130 million worldwide against a $35 million budget as of January 7, 2026. McFadden’s novel, from which the film was adapted, has sold millions of copies since its release in 2022.
“It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew,” said Feig of the film’s positive reception.
‘The Housemaid’ is a Trilogy
“The Housemaid” series is a trilogy, with the second installment titled “The Housemaid’s Secret.” Following the events of “The Housemaid,” Millie finds herself working for another family, the Garricks. Similar to her tumultuous experience with the Winchester family, Millie discovers that not everything is what it seems. The story is filled with twists and turns in typical McFadden fashion.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the McFadden sequel, saying that “‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”
An adaptation of the trilogy’s third installment, “The Housemaid is Watching,” is yet to be confirmed.
