KATSEYE’s Sophia Laforteza Announces Hiatus

Recently, Sophia Laforteza of the global girl group KATSEYE has been missing from multiple performances due to being sick. Now, HYBE X GEFFEN has announced her hiatus only five months after Manon Bannerman announced her own hiatus. With the original group of six now down to four, fans wonder what’s next for KATSEYE.

On August 7th, HYBE X GEFFEN announced on Weverse that Laforteza would be taking a step back from the group in a joint statement. HXG’s statement begins by confirming that Laforteza will not be included in KATSEYE performances for the time being. “We are very sorry to share that Sophia will be temporarily unable to participate in upcoming promotional activities. We understand how much EYEKONS were looking forward to seeing Sophia on stage, but it is imperative that her mental health and wellness are prioritized. Sophia has been receiving the utmost support, and following thorough consultations with medical professionals, it has been advised that she take dedicated time for extended rest and ongoing care to ensure a full recovery.”

Lara Raj previously revealed that Laforteza was sick at the WILD HEARTS film premiere. Afterward, the group went on to perform their new single “Animal” without her.

HXG’s statement continues with positivity towards the hiatus. “While Sophia herself is eager to perform alongside her members, the health, safety, and long-term well-being of our artists will always remain our highest priority. We will continue to closely monitor her progress and support her journey. We plan to reassess her condition in September and will share a further update with fans at that time.”

Laforteza took to Instagram shortly after the official announcement, personally addressing her fans. She wrote, “It truly breaks my heart to have to miss out on a lot. You know how much I love being on stage, performing, and sharing these moments with you. Making this decision wasn’t easy, but I’m learning that health has to come first. I’m realizing that if I don’t take care of my mind and body now, I won’t be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long.” She continued by thanking her fans for the support and asking for kindness toward the other KATSEYE members.

Fan Response and Manon Bannerman’s Hiatus

The hiatus came as a shock to fans, with most not expecting another member hiatus after Manon Bannerman’s. Because Raj had revealed she was sick, many fans of the group thought Laforteza would only be missing a few performances. Fans react with well wishes and support for Sophia as she is a beloved member of the group.

While fans are sending positive affirmations to Laforteza, many are also reflecting on the contrast between this and Manon Bannerman’s controversial hiatus.

HXG announced Bannerman’s hiatus in February and has been the source of tension in the KATSEYE fandom ever since. Bannerman’s solo fans insist that someone forced her on hiatus. KATSEYE vehemently denies that Manon was forced on hiatus and maintains that the door is always open for her return.

As some consider the difference between the two, others are expressing their disappointment at Laforteza’s absence in the upcoming tour.

It’s clear that no matter the direction of the reaction, fans are devastated to know that Sophia will be absent from performances and are wishing her a speedy recovery.
