‘Catfish: The TV Show’ Has Been Canceled After Nine Seasons

MTV has officially canceled the long-running reality procedural “Catfish” after nine seasons, according to Variety. The series was based on a documentary of the same name, which actually coined the term “catfish” to describe someone who pretends to be someone else on the internet.

The documentary followed Nev Schulman, a young man who developed a relationship with a woman online. Unfortunately, the woman was not who she originally claimed to be, and much of what she had told Schulman was a lie.

Schulman went on to host the MTV series, where he helped other people in online relationships figure out who they were actually talking to. For the first seven seasons, Schulman cohosted the show with Max Joseph, a director known for his work on “We Are Your Friends” starring Zac Efron and Emily Ratajkowski.

After Joseph left the show, Schulman stayed on and worked with a rotating slate of guest hosts, including Machine Gun Kelly, Elle King, Nick Young, and more. Eventually, Kamie Crawford was selected to become the show’s permanent host, alongside Schulman. Six years from her first episode, Crawford also decided to leave the show.

What The Catfish Hosts Have Said About the Show’s End

Schulman and Joseph posted an Instagram video together addressing the show’s cancelation. Schulman smiled through the video, while Joseph suggested “Catfish” may not be over for good. Specifically, he said, “Maybe it’s just on pause.”

Schulman clarified, saying “‘Catfish’ as we’ve known it is over.” He went on the honor the journey he went on hosting the show for so long. He thanked the crew for all their hard work, as well as the fans for their support over the years.

At the end of the video, Schulman and Joseph left fans with a humorous piece of advice: “Never call someone a fat a** Kelly Price.” The advice was a reference to a very famous episode of the show where a man learned his online boyfriend was actually his female cousin who had filmed the whole episode with him.

Crawford has yet to make a statement.
