Leroy Garrett, known for his career on MTV’s “Real World: Las Vegas” and “The Challenge,” recently went on “The Zach Nichols Podcast” to discuss his performance on “The Challenge: Vets & New Threats” and explain why he won’t be returning for the show’s 42nd season.
As Garrett told the Patreon-exclusive podcast, he was disappointed by his performance on “The Challenge: Vets & New Threats.” Garrett showed brave humility as he told the hosts, “I was, hands down, the worst guy there.” The “Challenge” vet was able to laugh about it, acknowledging that he had low expectations when he went on the season.
On previous seasons, Garrett had believed he could win the whole show, although he has yet to win a final after 14 seasons. However, this year, Garrett knew he was unlikely to make it to the final, let alone win the grand prize.
Ultimately, Garrett’s less-than-stellar performance came down to his lack of training pre-season. Comically, Garrett recalled a story involving his wife, Kam Williams. “Kam told me, she said, ‘Babe, when are you gonna get off the couch?’ Meanwhile I’m eating Doritos. I can’t do that expecting to go compete,” Garrett said.
Having learned his lesson, Garrett admitted he will not return for “The Challenge” season 42, although he’s not closing the door on the show completely. “I won’t be on 42 … there’s no way that I would show up how I showed up for this season,” he said, adding, “I feel like it’s not fair to another competitor,” given that Challengers often compete in pairs or on teams.
Garrett is a fan-favorite competitor, so hopefully he chooses to return for a future season. He’s definitely due for a win.
Leroy Garrett’s Challenge Career
GettyGarrett first appeared on “The Challenge” when he competed on “Rivals,” partnered with his “Real World: Las Vegas” cast mate Michael Ross after his original partner, Adam Royer, was sent home for fighting. Garrett and Ross made it all the way to the final on their rookie season, ultimately withdrawing from the competition when Ross worried he couldn’t complete the challenge without injuring himself.
Since then, Garrett has made it to four more finals, although he’s never been able to secure the win. On “The Challenge: Vets & New Threats,” Garrett and his partner, America Lopez, managed to stay out of elimination for most of the game. However, when they came in last place during a difficult daily challenge, their luck ran out. They were sent into elimination against Theo Campbell and Adrienne Naylor, losing in a confusing tangram puzzle elimination.
Leroy Garrett’s Life Outside ‘The Challenge’
Garrett is married to his fellow “Challenge” competitor, Kam Williams, and they have two kids together. They live in Michigan, where Garrett is a barber. Since “The Challenge: Vets & New Threats,” Garrett has been working on his endurance, sharing his fitness journey on Instagram.
