HGTV legend Scott McGillivray revealed his biggest secret to being successful after more than 25 years in the real estate business.
The “Scott’s Vacation House Rules” star partnered with Turbo Tenant for an appearance on the Friday, May 1, episode of the “How to Be a Better Landlord” podcast.
Scott McGillivray’s ‘Biggest Advantage’
McGillivray discussed how the property management industry has changed over the last quarter century, and encouraged aspiring landlords to take advantage of the tools available.
“[Scott McGillivray] joins us this Friday to discuss why the right tools are the ultimate game changer in today’s market. From avoiding AI hallucinations to mastering cash flow, we’re diving deep into the tech that makes property management a breeze,” Turbo Tenant shared via Instagram on Thursday, April 30. “If you’ve ever wanted to know how the pros manage properties without losing their minds (or their weekends), you won’t want to miss this.”
In the clip shared via Instagram from his podcast appearance, the “Income Property: Reno to Riches” star explained that today’s property managers “[don’t] even collect the rent.”
“He doesn’t pay the bills. You know? He’s making money doing nothing,” McGillivray continued. “People are typing it into AI, ‘How do I become a landlord and manage my properties?’ And they’re getting terrible answers out of it, unfortunately. Once you have positive cash flow, you have all the power. But, using the right tools is probably the biggest advantage in today’s market that I didn’t have 25 years ago.”
Turbo Tenant is a free platform offered to landlords “to market properties, screen tenants, collect rent, and much more from a single location.”
Scott McGillivray Is a Mentor to HGTV Stars
Scott’s expertise in production has made him the go-to for fellow HGTV stars looking to branch out.
“Good Bones” alum Mina Starsiak Hawk opened up about her goals of returning to television, telling Alison Victoria she reached out to McGillivray for advice.
During a recent appearance on Victoria’s “Pap Smear” podcast, Starsiak Hawk revealed she has come up with concepts for a new show.
“I was actually, I was talking to Scott McGillivray — because he does production [and] he’s talent — so kind of picking his brain,” she said during her Thursday, April 30, appearance. “So I was going back through my emails to see everything that I’d kind of sent up the flagpole. But it’s also tricky because the flagpole keeps changing.”
Starsiak Hawk — who is currently starring alongside McGillivray on season 7 of “Rock the Block” — continued, “Unfortunately, it matters who’s in charge because different people like different things and like different talent and like different concepts.”
In addition to appearing as the lead on numerous HGTV renovation series, McGillvray is the “CEO of McGillivray Group and McGillivray Entertainment, co-founder of real estate investing education company, Keyspire, and an accomplished real estate investor with hundreds of properties across North America,” according to his website.
The Canada native also keeps busy as an influencer, working with Habitat for Humanity Canada, and enjoying time with his wife and daughters at their home in Toronto.
