Music industry icon Bob Weir passed away on January 10. The announcement of his passing was shared on his official Instagram and was met with great sadness. “He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues,” the statement on Instagram about his death reads. He was 78.
In a memorial service held in Weir’s honor, John Mayer shared his thoughts and reflected on what he meant to him.
John Mayer Honors Bob Weir
A public memorial at the Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco was held in Weir’s honor on Saturday, January 17, and Mayer was given the honors of speaking at his service. He delivered a heartfelt speech and was visibly emotional as he stood onstage wearing black sunglasses and a black suit. CBS News shared footage of his eulogy on X.
“In the 30 years that preceded me, Bob had become a counter-cultural icon. I was a child of the 1980s. I come from a world of structural thinking: the concept, the theorizing, the reassessing, the perfecting,” Mayer said. “Bob learned early on that spirit, heart, soul, curiosity, and fearlessness were the path to glory. We both found success with each of our templates, and then we found each other.”
Mayer reflected on his experience of playing music with Weir and claimed he “took a chance” on him. He became visibly emotional as he remembered someone whom he loved so dearly and who had such a significant impact on his life. He ended his speech with a message of gratitude, expressing how Weir had given him a “musical community.”

Other reactions include “Perfect speech” and “The death of close friends like this can be so painful. May his soul rest in peace.”
This is not the first time Mayer has paid tribute to Weir; after his death, he shared a beautiful post on Instagram celebrating the late musician. On January 12, Mayer posted a black-and-white photo of Weir, along with his thoughts in the caption. “Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure,” Mayer wrote. “If you say it’s not the end, then I’ll believe you. I’ll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime.”
