Lainey Wilson can’t be described as a sore loser. The country music star recalls the interaction she had with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, after the former won the Best Country Album Grammy for “Cowboy Carter” at the 2025 ceremony.
In her Netflix documentary “Lainey Wilson: Keepin’ Country Cool,” Wilson details the meeting she had with Knowles-Carter at the event.
Wilson Remained Cool ln Face Of Loss
GettyAlthough Wilson lost out on the category win, she still managed to find time to congratulate the winner, PEOPLE reported.
The “4x4xU” singer was nominated for her album “Whirlwind.”
“I didn’t win, but it was time for us to lose something,” she revealed in the documentary.
“I walked over to Beyoncé, and she was so kind. We had a lot of great things to say to each other,” she said.
“You could tell that we both had a respect for each other, it was like a I see you, you see me, kind of thing. She said, ‘It means a lot that you walked over here and did that.'”
She attributes the meeting to the “country music” attitude of inclusivity.
“I’m not one of the artists that’s like, ‘Hey, you go stay over there on your side,'” she said.
“That’s not the way that I was raised. Also, when I think of country music, it’s always been: Welcome everybody with open arms.”
The win was historic for Beyoncé, marking the first time a Black female artist has won the award.
Wilson: “She Was Kind Of Shocked”
GettyIn her PEOPLE cover story, Wilson elaborated on the meeting, saying she “went over and tapped her 7-foot tall security guard like, ‘Hey, can I talk to Beyoncé?'”
And her boldness seemed to pay off.
“We just had a nice conversation,” she shared. “I mean, I was loving on her, she was loving on me. And yeah, I think she was kind of shocked that I came over there and talked to her.”
“I think through her record, a lot of people ended up finding out that they loved country music, and that’s really good for me. I want people to see how awesome this genre truly is and what it has to offer. If you give it a real, fair shot, you understand why people get sucked into it.”
Holler previously reported Wilson said she and Knowles-Carter “share a deep appreciation for what each other does.”
“She’s introduced a lot of people to the country genre that maybe never even knew that they liked it,” she said.
Country Superstar Says “It Always Goes Back To The Music”
Wilson admitted that her career isn’t just about the accolades, per PEOPLE.
She believes that “trophies and awards are things that come along with success, but it cannot define me as a person, because that’s when I lose sight of who I am.”
“I’m in the middle of learning right now I’m not just a singer, songwriter, musician – that’s what I do,” she shared, in a moment of refreshing honesty. “It’s hard not to put your self-worth into the awards, the flashy things, the people clapping. I’ve caught myself absolutely doing it, and I’m like, ‘Okay, reality check, you’re not always going to be getting those awards.’
“At the end of the day, it always goes back to the music,” she concluded.
“Lainey Wilson: Keepin’ Country Cool” is now streaming on Netflix.
