A couple of days ago, boy band sweetheart Lance Bass caught up with TMZ. Or rather, TMZ caught up with him. While exiting an airport with his family in tow after returning from a Disney cruise, a journalist grilled him on what it’s like to travel with children, how he enjoyed the food on his cruise, and of course… what’s coming down the pipeline for *NSYNC.
The journalist said he heard at one point that *NSYNC turned down an offer to do a biopic. Bass replied he heard those same rumblings, but commented he had never been personally approached. “And if someone’s gonna do a biopic, I think I’m gonna be producing that thing,” he quipped. He then jokingly asked if the band members were really that old to even deserve one — Bass himself is only 46.
What Would the Biopic Cover?
GettyNaturally, the journalist wondered what point in the band’s illustrious career would the biopic even highlight. The band formed in 1995 and announced a hiatus in 2002 so that members could focus on solo projects. Without missing a beat, Bass confirmed that the film would have to focus on the Lou Pearlman stuff. “That was pretty dramatic,” he admitted.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Pearlman was the shady Svengali of pop music in the 90s. He formed and funded the Backstreet Boys by placing an ad in a local Orlando paper, and then after their massive success, did the same with *NSYNC. In 2008, he was convicted of running a Ponzi scheme and sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Following his death in 2016, Bass produced the 2019 documentary “The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story,” which premiered at SXSW.
Who Would Play Him?
GettyOn the subject of who would play Bass in the feature film, Bass laughed that he’d have to first figure out who the young kids even are these days. The journalist pitched Chad Michael Murray, but Bass shot that down. He was only 16 at the start of *NSYNC!
Casting aside, one thing is clear: Bass would only sign on to the biopic if he produces it. So, whether or not it happens, one thing is for certain — it’ll be on Mr. Bass’s terms! And since *NSYNC sold over 70 million albums worldwide, audiences will be ready if and when the project ever comes together.
