At the Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg has passed away at the age of 52. The news was first reported by Swedish public broadcaster SVT Nyheter on Tuesday, September 16.
Lindberg was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2023, which is a cancer that “affects your glandular tissues,” per Cleveland Clinic. The band announced that he had passed away due to “complications” related to cancer.
His career began as a vocalist in the band Grotesque, before he went on to co-found At the Gates in 1990, which broke up in 1995 but reformed in 2007.

At The Gates posted on Instagram on Sept. 16, confirming the news and speaking about Lindberg’s impact.
Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment. Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved,” they wrote. “Tomas – You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit.”
“You will be eternally missed,” the band added. “Forever in our hearts.”
Tributes Pour In For Tomas Lindberg
David Isberg, who is a founding member of Swedish metal band Opeth, posted a tribute on Instagram to the singer following news of his passing.
“Tomas ‘Goatspell’ Lindberg 10-16-1972 – 09-16-2025,” he wrote. “It is cold out here Ans lonely is my journey I walk the trail of broken souls The darkest path through infinity.”
Japanese band MONO also posted a sweet note.
“We’re saddened to hear about the passing of Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates today. When he curated Roadburn Festival in 2019, he kindly invited us to perform and we became friends. Thank you for the love, and our sincere condolences go to his family and loved ones. ATG forever,” they wrote.
As did Peaceville Records, a British independent heavy metal-oriented record label.
“We extend our condolences upon hearing of the passing of At The Gates’ Tomas Lindberg, our deepest sympathies to those near & dear. Greatly gifted writer, fiercest of vocalists making an indelible mark on Death Metal forever, gone too soon to “join with the pulse of the universe,” the post said.
