Country Superstar’s Wife Digs Into Her Husband’s Health Battle in Honest Reveal

It’s been 12 years since Randy Travis suffered a debilitating stroke, and the country singer has made incredible strides since then. He still needs the assistance of a wheelchair or walker, but he has made unexpected improvements every day.

Recently, his wife, Mary Travis, emotionally explained to Fox Digital that, after the stroke, Randy was hit with several hospital-borne viruses. These, along with a staph infection, caused him to deteriorate rapidly. Despite being told that his chance of pulling through was slim, Mary refused to give up. She wasn’t letting anyone else give up, either.

Against All Odds: Mary Travis’ Heartwarming Battle for Randy’s Life

“‘We need to pull the plug,” Mary recalled the doctors telling her. “‘He’s got too many things going against him at that point.'”

Mary explained that Randy was battling viruses like Serratia and Pseudomonas, and also had a staph infection. His blood cell count was low, and his vital signs were unstable. The doctors told Mary that “‘he just doesn’t have the strength to get through this.'”

Mary walked to her husband’s bedside and grabbed his hand.

“That was the moment that I knew that Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face,” she told Fox Digital. “And I said, ‘He’s still fighting.'”

She told the doctors that they weren’t giving up on Randy, that they were “going to fight with him.”

“And I meant that, and Randy meant it, and I knew at that point in time, because he had every odd in the world against him, and he wasn’t giving up,” Mary said. “And I was so encouraged by that, to be honest. He was my inspiration.”

Randy Travis’s Remarkable Comeback Tour and the Power of AI in Music

In 2021, the couple sat down with the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center. Mary discussed how much Randy’s speech had improved since his aphasia diagnosis after his stroke.

“I can’t tell you how many times in the hospital that we heard that, whatever speech you’re going to get back, you’ll get it back in the six months,” she said. “After that, there’s really no hope.”

Mary said that, eight years later, “there’s still every day a new word, or two new words put together.”

This year, Randy Travis began his “More Life Tour,” which features James Dupre singing all of the songs with the original Randy Travis Band. With the help of AI, Randy has even created new songs, something Mary views as a blessing.

“AI will be able to use Randy’s vocal from the stems and create a whole new song from a song that may not be completed,” she said. “And it may work with another artist to co-write, to finish it.  And I think the sky’s the limit and AI is a wonderful tool if used correctly, just like the telephone, the computer, everything else in life that we use every day now and take for granted, at one point in time, it was as frightening as AI is today.”
