Selena Gomez is meeting long-running fan questions with honesty and grace. During an Instagram Live on December 16, later reposted on X, the singer and actress addressed curiosity around changes in her voice, choosing openness over explanation or apology.
Gomez Responds to Voice Questions With Calm Honesty
Getty“Yeah, I’ve gotten this question a few times—the voice thing. So, sometimes when I’m on — nevermind,” Gomez said, briefly pausing before continuing. “There’s no excuse. I don’t really care.”
Instead of overexplaining, Gomez spoke about listening to her body and giving herself space.
“I think my point is that sometimes things happen,” she said. “I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all.”
The moment reflected a familiar theme in Gomez’s public life: choosing vulnerability, self-acceptance, and calm honesty over perfection.
How Lupus Has Affected Selena Gomez’s Health
Gomez has been open in recent years about living with lupus and bipolar disorder. In a September episode of the “Good Hang with Amy Poehler” podcast, she shared that lupus has caused arthritis in her hands.
“I have arthritis in my fingers, and that’s due to my lupus,” Gomez said. “So, I remember before the brand, I was trying to open a water bottle, and it hurt really bad before I was on the right medication.”
That experience helped shape her Rare Beauty line.
“And we somehow inherently made the products easy to open, and then we realized, wait — they kind of have to be that way,” she explained. “And then we started to make every product with the intention of [working for] anybody who [has] dexterity problems.”
Gomez Keeps Health Conversations Real and Relatable
GettyGomez has also used social media to address lighter questions about her appearance. Last week, she shared a makeup-free video on Instagram Stories responding to a fan who asked, “How do you shave your mustache?”
She clarified that what some viewers noticed was not facial hair. As per People, she responded, “I don’t have a five o’clock shadow,” adding that the discoloration was due to “my melasma.”
“I totally get it,” Gomez said. “It’s from the sun,” she explained, while encouraging followers to use sunscreen.
Why Skincare and Self-Care Matter to Her
The singer has previously spoken about acne and skin changes, including during an episode of Vogue’s “Beauty Secrets.”
“I notice when I get stressed or something, I break out more or I get lazy with my routine, so I feel like it’s just become a part of it,” she said. “And I just deal with whatever I got that day.”
For Gomez, skincare is about more than appearance.
“When you are taking care of your skin, you are taking care of your body and your mind and your soul, just because I think it’s all connected,” she shared. She added that sunscreen remains essential due to her lupus diagnosis.
Through it all, Gomez continues to speak with honesty, offering fans a clear reminder that health journeys are rarely simple and never one-size-fits-all.
