Chase Stokes says the time has come to say goodbye to “Outer Banks.”
The actor, who has starred as John B. Routledge since the Netflix series debuted in 2020, said the cast and creators feel confident about ending the show with its upcoming fifth season. In recent interviews, Stokes described the decision as creative, rooted in storytelling rather than longevity.
“We are thankful for the run,” Stokes told People. “But we are also ready for it to be done.”
Netflix confirmed earlier this year that Season 5 will serve as the show’s final installment, bringing to a close the sun-soaked treasure-hunting saga that became one of the streamer’s most successful young adult dramas. The final season is expected to premiere in 2026.
From the beginning, “Outer Banks” followed a group of working-class teens known as the Pogues as they searched for lost treasure while navigating class divides and personal loyalty. What started as a modest summer series quickly evolved into a cultural staple for Netflix, helping define its slate of youth-oriented originals.
A Deliberate Ending After Five Seasons
Stokes said the decision to end the series came from a desire to protect the story’s integrity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he said the cast and creators wanted to avoid extending the narrative beyond its natural conclusion.
“You want to leave people wanting more, not wishing it had ended sooner,” Stokes said.
According to Stokes, show co-creator Jonas Pate had always envisioned “Outer Banks” as a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. As the series progressed, that plan became more important to preserve, especially as the show’s popularity grew.
Deadline reported that Season 5 will bring the Pogues into their most emotionally and physically demanding chapter yet, raising the stakes as the characters confront the consequences of their past decisions. Netflix has not released plot details, but the creative team has described the final season as a full-circle moment for the group.
Stokes acknowledged that wrapping the show feels bittersweet. He said filming the final episodes allowed him to reflect on how much his life had changed since landing the role.
In an interview with People, Stokes recalled feeling overwhelmed and uncertain early in his career, including moments of self-doubt during auditions. He said “Outer Banks” not only gave him stability but also allowed him to grow alongside the character he portrayed.
Looking Ahead After John B.
As “Outer Banks” comes to an end, Stokes has already begun shifting his focus toward the future. He told People that he plans to make his directorial debut next fall and wants to pursue roles that challenge the public’s perception of him.
“I want to show that I am more than the beach kid with the bandana,” Stokes said.
He also cited actors who successfully transitioned out of franchise roles as inspiration, including performers who used mainstream success as a stepping stone rather than a limitation.
Despite his eagerness to move forward, Stokes said he remains deeply grateful for the show and its fans. He credited the cast, which includes Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, and Drew Starkey, for creating a collaborative environment that made the long production schedules worthwhile.
As Netflix prepares to release the final season of “Outer Banks,” the show stands as a reminder of how streaming-era hits can shape both careers and audiences. For Stokes, closing this chapter does not mark an ending so much as an opening.
