A wedding weekend takes a sinister turn in Netflix’s upcoming limited series “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen,” a psychological horror drama set to premiere on March 26.
The eight-episode series follows Rachel Harkin, played by Camila Morrone, as she travels with her fiancé, Nicky, portrayed by Adam DiMarco, to his family’s secluded estate ahead of their wedding. What should be a celebratory gathering slowly transforms into an experience marked by dread, suspicion, and emotional unraveling.
Netflix announced the premiere date in January alongside first-look images that tease the show’s tense and unsettling tone, according to Deadline. The series comes from Upside Down Pictures, the production company founded by “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer, and marks their first Netflix release since the conclusion of their hit sci-fi series.
A Slow Descent Into Psychological Horror
Rather than relying on jump scares, “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” builds tension through atmosphere and character psychology. As Rachel spends more time with Nicky’s wealthy family, small interactions begin to feel off. She struggles to determine whether her growing anxiety reflects pre-wedding nerves or a genuine threat.
Creator and showrunner Haley Z. Boston said the series focuses on internal fear rather than spectacle. According to Entertainment Weekly, the story uses the pressure of an impending wedding to explore themes of commitment, class, and belonging through a horror lens.
The estate setting plays a central role in that unease. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show uses enclosed interiors and isolated surroundings to heighten Rachel’s sense of confinement. The closer the wedding day gets, the more Rachel feels trapped by both the environment and the expectations placed on her.
Netflix released still images that depict an elegant, carefully curated wedding setting. The polished visuals contrast sharply with the unease unfolding beneath the surface.
A New Creative Chapter for the Duffer Brothers
While the Duffer Brothers serve as executive producers, they did not run the series day to day. Matt and Ross Duffer said previously that they wanted to use their production company to support emerging creators rather than lead every project themselves, according to Deadline.
“Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” represents the first series released under that approach. Boston leads the creative vision, while the Duffers provide guidance and oversight.
The supporting cast includes Karla Crome and Gus Birney, who portray figures within Nicky’s social circle. Their characters add to the tension as Rachel questions whom she can trust.
For Netflix, the series continues a broader push into character-driven horror that prioritizes emotional stakes and atmosphere. For audiences, it taps into a universal fear that feels especially sharp in a wedding setting: the anxiety of realizing too late that you may be committing to the wrong future.
