Everything We Know About the Upcoming ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel

The animated musical sensation “KPop Demon Hunters” has officially become Netflix’s most-watched English-language film of all time, and now Sony Pictures and Netflix are in early discussions about bringing the demon-slaying girl group back for another adventure.

With 236 million total views since its June 2025 premiere, the film has shattered streaming records while also dominating theatrical box office and music charts. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the unprecedented success has sparked serious conversations between the studios about expanding this colorful universe of K-pop stars who secretly battle supernatural forces.

Directors Ready to Explore Character Backstories

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have already begun outlining potential storylines for a follow-up film. According to reports, there is a particular focus on developing the origin stories of the main characters. The original film followed HUNTR/X, a three-member K-pop girl group consisting of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who balance international stardom with their secret responsibilities as demon hunters.

“We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people,” director Kang told Entertainment Weekly. “A sequel can explore what made them demon hunters.”

“What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?” She added, “There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show.”

Kang said that if a sequel were to develop, “Then we can reveal more of that backstory.”

The directors are considered essential to any future installment, and Sony insiders confirm they have held preliminary conversations about returning. Even so, no formal agreements are in place yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The creative team’s involvement would be crucial for maintaining the distinctive visual style and storytelling approach that made the original such a phenomenon.

Voice actress Arden Cho, who portrayed Rumi, has expressed enthusiasm about unresolved plot elements from the first film. She particularly noted the ambiguous ending involving Jinu, the leader of the demonic boy band Saja Boys, suggesting plenty of material for future exploration.

The film’s success stems from its unique blend of infectious K-pop energy with Korean shamanic folklore. It results in a story that resonates across cultural boundaries while maintaining authentic cultural elements. This careful balance earned the film an impressive 97% critic and 91% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Record-Breaking Success Drives ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Interest

The financial arrangements between Sony and Netflix create a compelling case for collaboration on additional films. Netflix covered the entire $100 million production budget while paying Sony an additional $25 million fee, representing 25% of the budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sony also receives portions of soundtrack sales and music publishing fees. The company potentially earns profit margins of 20% to 30%. This is compared to the typical 10% to 12% range studios usually target.

The film’s soundtrack has achieved historic milestones, becoming the first to place four songs simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10, led by the hit “Golden.” The musical success adds considerable value to any potential sequel, as the songs have become cultural phenomena in their own right.

Netflix’s rare decision to give the film a theatrical sing-along release shows the platform’s commitment to the property. The limited release in over 1,700 theaters worldwide generated approximately $19.2 million. Numerous sold-out shows have indicated strong audience demand for more content.

The streaming success has been particularly impressive among younger demographics. Sources indicate children are rewatching the film six to eight times on average, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

However, both studios must navigate their partnership carefully, as neither can proceed with a sequel independently. Netflix cannot develop a follow-up without Sony’s involvement. Meanwhile, Sony requires Netflix’s participation under their existing agreement, according to the outlet.

The success of “KPop Demon Hunters” arrives at a time when original animated content has struggled at traditional box offices. This makes the Netflix partnership particularly valuable for both companies. While established studios have focused on remakes and franchise extensions, this original story has proven that new intellectual property can still capture global audiences.
