Al Roker lost 100 pounds after undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2002. Before starting his weight loss journey, he weighed 340 pounds. On August 26, the “Today” weatherman reflected on his incredible transformation by posting side-by-side photos of himself now and another from when he had started his weight loss.
Al Roker’s Fans Show Their Support
“Siena, 2009 vs. 2025. Only that clock tower and @debrobertsabc haven’t changed. I look ancient,” Roker captioned the photo on Instagram, giving fans a better understanding of when the images were taken and how far he has come on his weight loss journey.
The comment section of Roker’s post has been filled with supportive messages from fans. “Both of your smiles are timeless! Lovely photos!!!” a comment reads. ”You both look amazing and so very happy together!” another person shared.
Other reactions include, “You both look healthy and strong. Love you both,” “You look happy and healthy … you two are couples goals!” and “You look amazing.”

Roker credits his father, who passed away in 2001, with encouraging him to make a change in his lifestyle. “He made me promise I would get healthy,” he told People in an interview on June 3, 2025. “He wasn’t going to be there for his grandchildren, and he wanted to make sure I was.”
Al Roker Discusses Lifestyle Changes
Roker has managed to maintain his post-surgery weight and set realistic, attainable goals for himself, focusing on moderation. He also understands the importance of staying active and moving his body.
“Moderation rather than deprivation is better in the long run,” he told People. “If you deprive yourself of stuff that you like, eventually you’re going to snap and go crazy.”

When it comes to exercise, Roker focuses on movement throughout the day and strength training. “My mantra is, ‘Something is better than nothing,'” he said. “Maybe you’ll be running marathons or entering weight-lifting contests, but I think most people just want a level of fitness that improves their quality of life.”
He starts every day with ten minutes of weight training from Start TODAY’s app. “It’s not so much to bulk up but to keep your bones strong, keep your flexibility, which is important as you age,” he said. Keeping his strength up means he can lift his toddler granddaughter, Sky. “But you know, in a couple of years she’s going to be a bigger load. So ‘grampa’ wants to be able to carry her up and down the stairs,” he added.
Roker tries to achieve at least 10,000 steps. “I like the number, and it feels good when I hit it,” he said.
