He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy,” she said in a statement, BBC reports

He posted a black-and-white throwback photo of Redford on Instagram and shared his thoughts in the caption. “Robert Redford leaves us, an icon of cinema in every sense,” he wrote. “Actor, director, producer, and founder of the Sundance Festival. His talent will continue to move us forever, shining through the frames and in our memory. RIP.”

Redford had an impressive career and over 50 film credits to his name. He won a slew of awards, including the prestigious Academy Award for Best Director in 1981 for “Ordinary People.” He was nominated again for the award in 1995.

Redford also worked to champion independent filmmakers with the creation of the Sundance Film Festival. Speaking of the festival in a 2014 interview with BBC, he said, “I didn’t want to do it in New York or LA… I said, let’s put it in Utah, let’s make it hard to get to. Let’s make it weird. We started Sundance as a place to come and develop new artists, with the ambition of creating a community and giving them a platform for their work. I don’t think our mission has changed at all.”

He continued, “Thirty years ago, these people had nowhere to go. Now I’m very proud that actually, the directors of ‘Gravity’ and ‘American Hustle’ – Alfonso Cuaron and David O Russell – actually came up through Sundance, and now they work in the mainstream.”
