Ethan Hawke has joined in with the chorus of high-profile individuals paying tribute to Robert Redford, who sadly passed away on September 16.
The Hollywood icon left this mortal coil in his sleep at his home in Sundance, Utah, at the age of 89 — and countless figures from the world of entertainment and beyond have spoke highly of him in the wake of his passing.
The likes of Marisa Tomei, Hilary Clinton, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Julianne Moore, and Barbra Streisand are just some of the big names from the world of entertainment and beyond to have publicly mourned the loss of Redford with kind words about him — and actor, author, and film director Hawke has now added his name to the long and ever-lengthening list.
Hawke Paid Tribute to Redford’s ‘Artistry’ and ‘Activism’
“Training Day” and “The Black Phone” star Hawke took to Instagram, where he has a hefty 1.5 million following, to post a photograph of himself with Redford at the Sundance Institute’s “An Artist at the Table Presented by IMDbPro” event at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The post also included a carousel of additional images featuring Redford, including one of him at work on the set of his 1988 comedy-drama movie, “The Milagro Beanfield War,” and another posing with his “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” co-star, Paul Newman.
Accompanying the images Hawke posted were some truly lovely words that clearly came from Hawke’s heart. Hawke wrote, “Robert Redford, our ultimate champion of independent film, relentless advocate for authentic storytelling and fiercely passionate environmentalist. Robert’s legacy remains ingrained in our culture, transformed by his artistry, activism and the founding of Sundance Institute and Film Festival. @sundanceorg.”
While Ethan Hawke and Robert Redford never worked on a movie together, they were clearly friendly acquaintances — something that was more than evident in other pictures from that aforementioned Sundance Film Festival in which they warmly greet each other.
The Actor’s Followers Reacted With Warmth About ‘Wonderful Human’ Redford
GettyAs you would expect, the reaction to Hawke’s post by his followers was one of sadness and warmth, as they collectively paid their respects to the big screen legend.
A follower wrote, “My favorite.💔😞🤩What an incredible man. One of the greats! He did amazing work for the industry, and our country.🙏☮️♥️”
Another commented, “Will love him forever ❤️ fantastic actor, great director, wonderful human. Rest in peace 🩶”
Someone else said, “His is a Life – and a Legacy as an Environmentalist and Nurturer of Young Filmmakers – to be celebrated. Live for Something and Have a Purpose. Thank you for all your Works and Passion to make an impact and inspire. Flights of Angels, sir….”
One user also noted, “Robert Redford a true legend of film his work will live on. He shaped modern cinema in so many ways, as an actor, director, and champion of independent film with Sundance. He leaves behind an incredible legacy.🕯️🕊️rip.”
Suffice it to say that Redford left a significant positive legacy — both in terms of his professional repertoire and his numerous generous actions as a decent human being — that will last for a very long time. The many kind words of his peers, like Ethan Hawke, will only help to further cement that legacy.
May he rest in eternal peace.
