Caroline Kennedy Will Follow Mother Jackie Kennedy’s ‘Playbook’ After Daughter Tatiana Schlossberg’s Passing

Caroline Kennedy was photographed cradling granddaughter Josephine Moran while exiting daughter Tatiana Schlossberg’s funeral on Monday, December 5. According to a family friend, Kennedy will “make sure” Schlossberg’s young children remember their mother.

Caroline Kennedy Will ‘Make Sure’ Her Grandchildren Remember Their Mother

Kennedy is no stranger to heartache and tragedy, having lost her father, President John F. Kennedy, just before her 6th birthday. Now, with the passing of her daughter, Kennedy “has to do the same thing her mother did with her and [her brother] John, in raising those kids,” a family friend told People on Tuesday, January 6.

“To make sure they remember their mom — and she has the playbook,” the friend added, referring to former First Lady Jackie Kennedy.

The Kennedy family has been struck with tragedy multiple times, beginning with JFK’s assassination in 1963. Five years later, his brother, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, was also assassinated. In 1999, Caroline’s brother, John F. Kennedy Jr, passed away in a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

“When you think about the losses Caroline has suffered, it was only [her brother] John that had suffered the same — and then she lost John,” Kennedy historian Steven M. Gillon told People. “For Caroline, it’s a series of horrible personal tragedies that lead up to what may be the hardest of them all.”

Gillon added, “Tatiana’s son is the same age that John was when he lost his dad. Tragically, history is repeating itself.”

Tatiana Schlossberg Passed Away at Age 35

On December 30, 2025, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced Schlossberg’s passing.

“Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts,” the foundation shared via Instagram.

The tragic news came just one month after the mother of two published an essay in The New Yorker, revealing her battle with acute myeloid leukemia and a rare mutation called Inversion 3.

She was diagnosed shortly after giving birth to Josie in May 2024, when doctors noticed a spike in her white blood cell count.

“For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry,” she wrote in her deeply personal essay. “Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family’s life, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.”

In addition to 20-month-old Josie, Schlossberg leaves behind 3-year-old son Edwin and husband George Moran.
