Comedian Colin Mochrie, best known for his improvisational work on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, is sharing an encouraging health update after undergoing emergency surgery for a detached retina, a serious eye condition that forced him to postpone dates on his ongoing comedy tour.
The 68-year-old entertainer thanked fans for their support and expressed optimism about his recovery and return to the stage.
Mochrie Thanks Fans For the Well Wishes
Mochrie took to Instagram on Monday, January 5, to provide fans with an update on how he was doing.
“Just a quick update to let you know that I’m still in treatments for my detached retina,” he began.
In his update, Mochrie also thanked followers for their outpouring of well wishes and said he was focused on healing. “It’s slow going, but moving in the right direction,” he wrote on Instagram, adding that the support from fans has meant “everything” to him during this time.
His message included a characteristic touch of humor, underscoring how important laughter and community are to him.
“If anyone out there is making a remake of Popeye, I’m your man. You’ll just have to wait till I’m allowed to get out of bed,” he wrote.
He also used the Frankie Valli song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” in the post.
Mochrie Was Currently on Tour
Mochrie’s health situation emerged in early January when a joint statement from him, his tour partner Asad Mecci and the official HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis tour account announced that he had been diagnosed with a detached retina and would be having emergency eye surgery.
The condition, which occurs when the retina separates from the back of the eye, typically requires prompt surgical intervention to prevent lasting vision problems.
“Colin has been diagnosed with a detached retina and will be undergoing emergency eye surgery today,” the statement read, adding that although the postponement of upcoming shows would disappoint fans, the comedian’s medical team was optimistic about his full recovery and advised rest and healing before returning to performances.
As a result of the diagnosis and surgery, several tour dates on Mochrie’s HYPROV tour — a live comedy experience that blends hypnosis and improv with Mecci — have been postponed.
Organizers said they’re working to reschedule shows and that tickets for affected performances will be honored for new dates once they are set. Fans also have the option to request refunds if they cannot attend rescheduled events.
Mochrie’s long career in comedy and television spans decades.
A Scottish-born Canadian, he earned fame on both the British and American versions of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, known for his quick wit and impeccable improvisational timing. Though the improv show itself ended its latest run in 2024, Mochrie continued performing live, bringing humor to audiences on tour.
Fans React to His Update
Fans and fellow performers reacted to the news with an outpouring of encouragement.
Many took to social media to send well wishes, saying they hoped for Mochrie’s swift recovery and return to performing.
“Sending healing vibes!” and “Can’t wait to see you back on stage!” were among the supportive messages shared.
Others praised Mochrie for still having a sense of humor through it all.
“Your wonderful sense of humor shining through during such a difficult time is why you are so loved!!” one user noted.
While there’s no firm timeline yet for when Mochrie will resume touring, his optimistic update and the thoughtful messages shared by his fans suggest that his characteristic laughter won’t be off stage for much longer.
