David Beckham Speaks Out on Family Rift With Son Brooklyn

David Beckham is speaking out after his son Brooklyn Beckham shared a series of emotional Instagram posts accusing his parents of trying to sabotage his marriage, offering a measured response that centers on parenting, growth and the complicated role of social media.

The former soccer star addressed the situation publicly for the first time during an appearance on CNBC’s financial program “Squawk Box” on Jan. 20, just one day after Brooklyn’s posts went live. While David did not mention his eldest son by name, his comments were widely seen as a response to the ongoing family tension, according to People.

During the interview, David spoke broadly about the influence of social media, acknowledging both its power and its potential risks, especially for young people. “I have always spoken about social media and the power of social media. For the good and for the bad,” he said.

David explained that he has tried to guide his four children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, toward using their platforms responsibly. He also acknowledged that mistakes are part of growing up, particularly in such a public way. “They make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes,” David said. “That is how they learn. That is what I try to teach my kids. You sometimes have to let them make those mistakes as well.”

He also pointed to his own use of social media for advocacy, including raising awareness for UNICEF, as an example of how platforms can be used positively. Before his CNBC appearance, David had largely avoided questions about the family situation while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, marking his first public outing since Brooklyn’s posts.

Brooklyn, 26, confirmed the long-rumored family rift in a lengthy Instagram Stories statement shared Jan. 19, accusing both David and Victoria Beckham of prioritizing image, publicity and what he called “Brand Beckham” over genuine relationships. According to EntertainmentNow, Brooklyn alleged that his parents repeatedly interfered in his marriage to wife Nicola Peltz Beckham and spread false narratives about the couple to the press.

In his statement, Brooklyn detailed several incidents surrounding his April 2022 wedding, including claims that Victoria canceled making Nicola’s wedding dress at the last minute and that family members told him Nicola was “not blood” and “not family.” He also alleged his parents pressured him to sign away rights to his name before the wedding and said their behavior toward him changed after he refused.

Brooklyn further claimed that his mother interrupted his planned first dance with Nicola at the reception and that his family excluded Nicola from private time with David during milestone events, including his father’s 50th birthday. He also said stepping away from his family has eased long-standing anxiety and pushed back against claims that Nicola controls him.

Brooklyn and Nicola never wanted the conflict to unfold publicly, while other insiders said David and Victoria remain hurt but hopeful and have asked to meet in an effort to move forward, per People.

David’s response did not directly rebut Brooklyn’s claims, but instead emphasized accountability and learning. “Children are allowed to make mistakes,” he said. “That is how they learn.”
