Elizabeth Banks Lands Lead Role in Upcoming True-Crime Series

Elizabeth Banks has a new role lined up.

Deadline reports that the actress is set to play Karen Read in the Prime Video and Warner Bros Television limited series that will focus on the trial that had everyone talking. Justin Noble is set to be the showrunner and will write the series, along with serving as executive producer. David E. Kelley will also be an executive producer.

The series will be based on the Law & Crime and Wondery podcast Karen, which told the true story of Read, who was accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer. He was found dead in the snow, with accusations that Read had hit him with her car that night. However, as the case unfolded, there were many who believed that it was actually a cover-up by state and local law enforcement.

The show will explore “society’s obsession with true crime, the allure of conspiracy, and the deepening crisis of trust in our institutions,” Deadline adds. And with that, insiders told the outlet that they have been “developing the project for some time and in recent months had started putting the package together.”

Noble’s resume includes a lot of successful shows, having most recently worked on the HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls. He was also a writer on Never Have I Ever and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

As for Kelley, his last courtroom drama, Presumed Innocent for Apple, has multiple Emmy nominations.

Another Karen Read Project Is In The Works

Following the end of Read’s second trial, with the first having ended in a mistrial, Read and her defense attorney, Alan Jackson, partnered with LBI Productions to tell the story behind the case that caused so much controversy, Deadline reported in June.

“With exclusive access to both Read and Jackson, the project will reveal the story behind the prosecution, the defense’s counter-investigation, and the cultural explosion that surrounded the case,” Deadline wrote. “Drawing on their first-hand experience, the project will reflect Read’s insight into the investigators’ conduct and showcase Jackson’s architecture of a murder defense built from the ground up in the war room.

The outlet added that “plans are simultaneously underway for a book project with involvement from both Read and Jackson, with Luke Janklow of Janklow & Nesbit repping publishing rights.”
