A Closer Look at Our ‘Survivor’ Winner Ranking Methodology

There are plenty of ways to rank “Survivor” winners, from their popularity amongst fans – like Entertainment Weekly’s “Survivor Winners Bracket” – to their edits on their respective seasons.

We’ve decided to avoid all that and focus on the stats, using a combination of 1). The percentage of votes each winner received from the Jury during their respective Final Tribal Council ceremonies and 2). Each winner’s respective “Torch Score” on “Survivor-Reference.”

The results of any given Final Tribal Council vote are fairly straightforward when it comes to out ranking. For example, if a winner received eight out of total 10 Jury votes on their winning season, they receive a score of 80.

The only issue with measuring solely by this metric is that it often results in ties. For example, seven different “Sole Survivors” received approximately 62.5 percent of the Final Tribal Council votes on their winning season.

That’s why we’ve incorporated the so-called “Torch Score,” described by “Survivor-Reference” operator Daniel Oehm as: “one number that captures a player’s full career; strategic dominance, challenge performance, and raw survival, weighted by how deep they went” into the competition.

The number, scored out of 100, is a combination of a “Survivor” player’s ability to:

  • Outwit (35%) – i.e. their voting accuracy, voting survival rate, target evasion rate, Idol efficiency and threat ratio.
  • Outplay (25%) – i.e.their Individual Immunity and Duel win rate, challenge win rate, tribal challenge win rate and challenge specialty profile
  • Outlast (40%) – i.e. their final placement, Tribal Council survival rate, days lasted, Jury approval rating and Merge rating.
