“House of the Dragon” is officially back in fans’ feeds. HBO released a new sizzle reel teasing its biggest upcoming projects, and tucked inside was the first fresh footage from season 3 of the “Game of Thrones” prequel. The brief but revealing look has already reignited conversation among viewers, especially after star Matt Smith appeared to hint at when the long-awaited next chapter might arrive.
With the Dance of the Dragons poised to explode into full-scale war finally, season 3 is shaping up to be a significant turning point for the series — and HBO seems ready to remind fans why the Targaryen saga still matters.
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Footage Teases An Even Darker Turn
The newly released HBO sizzle reel offers quick but striking glimpses of what’s ahead for Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower as their rivalry deepens. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke both appear in new footage that emphasizes how far past reconciliation the two former friends have drifted.
One moment in particular stood out to fans. Alicent ominously warns, “Rhaenyra will do what she has to do. And what she has to do will be dire.” The line underscores the brutal choices ahead as the civil war between Team Black and Team Green escalates.
Although HBO has not announced an official premiere date, the network previously confirmed that season 3 would arrive in summer 2026. According to Collider, HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys has narrowed that window even further, suggesting a June or July release — at least publicly.

The anticipation is heightened by mixed reactions to season 2, which wrapped in August 2024. While visually ambitious, many viewers felt the season ended just as the story was gaining momentum, saving the most explosive events from George R. R. Martin’s source material for later. Season 3 is widely expected to deliver those long-promised battles.
Matt Smith Slips August Premiere Date
While HBO continues to stay vague, Matt Smith may have let the dragon out of the bag. During a recent interview on “This Morning,” the actor, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, casually suggested that season 3 could debut later in the summer than previously thought.
“That comes out in… I think in August next year,” Smith said, referring to 2026.
If accurate, that timeline would place the premiere toward the end of HBO’s projected summer window. Smith’s character, once a volatile wildcard, ended season 2 fully aligned with Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne, setting the stage for Daemon’s deeper involvement in the war to come.
Set nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” chronicles the Targaryen civil war sparked when King Viserys Targaryen, portrayed by Paddy Considine, names his daughter as his heir. With dragons on both sides and alliances rapidly fracturing, season 3 is expected to finally bring the Dance of the Dragons to the battlefield.
Warner Bros. DiscoveryThe future of the franchise also appears secure. HBO renewed “House of the Dragon” for season 4 last month, and creator Ryan J. Condal has indicated that additional seasons beyond that are being discussed, depending on how the story unfolds and how audiences respond.
Before season 3 arrives, HBO will test fan enthusiasm with another Westeros expansion. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, premieres on January 18, and has already been renewed for season 2.
