‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Trailer Hints at Long-Awaited Battle of the Gullet (Watch)

“House of the Dragon” is gearing up for its next chapter. HBO has released the first official trailer for season 3, giving a closer look at what happens after the season 2 finale. The new footage shows tensions rising across Westeros as the conflict intensifies.

The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” and takes place about 200 years before “Game of Thrones.” It follows the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Trailer Shows Fallout From Season 2 Finale

The trailer opens with the immediate aftermath of the season 2 finale, which aired in August 2024. Tensions are clearly rising across Westeros as different factions respond to the shifting balance of power.

“There will be no doubt who the gods have chosen to rule,” Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) says cryptically in the trailer, as scenes unfold of dragons unleashing fire on their enemies and war spreading across Westeros.

Scenes throughout the trailer suggest the conflict is expanding beyond King’s Landing, drawing more of the Seven Kingdoms into the fight.

The trailer strongly hints at the Battle of the Gullet, a major naval conflict in the source material. In the trailer, ships clash at sea and dragons fly above the battlefield, signaling a larger scale of action.

Fan-favorite dragons Caraxes and Vhagar are also featured, with scenes of fire and destruction emphasizing their impact on the war.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Cast, Release Date, and Schedule Confirmed

The trailer introduces James Norton as Lord Ormund Hightower, adding a new figure to the expanding conflict. His role suggests that additional houses will become involved as the war grows.

The ensemble cast also includes Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen and D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Harry Collett as Jacaerys Velaryon, Bethany Antonia as Baela Targaryen, Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena Targaryen, Phia Saban as Helaena Targaryen, Jefferson Hall as Tyland Lannister and Jason Lannister, and Matthew Needham as Larys Strong, among others.

Created by Martin and Ryan Condal, “House of the Dragon” premiered on HBO in August 2022. Set about 200 years before “Game of Thrones,” the series centers on the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, a conflict that contributed to the family’s decline more than a century before Daenerys Targaryen’s birth.

HBO confirmed that “House of the Dragon” season 3 will premiere on June 21 at 9 p.m. New episodes will air weekly through the finale on August 9.

The upcoming season continues the Targaryen civil war storyline, with events building toward the show’s planned conclusion. HBO has confirmed that the series is expected to end with season 4.
