Jack Black still has some regret over one iconic role he turned down over his impressive career.
The beloved actor and comedian known for his electric energy and memorable on-screen roles, recently opened up about one of the few career decisions he wishes he could take back — turning down a major role in Pixar’s “The Incredibles.”
In a candid conversation during a Capital FM interview, Black described the moment as a learning experience that taught him a valuable lesson about choices and creative opportunities.
The role in question was Syndrome, the charismatic villain in Pixar’s 2004 animated hit “The Incredibles,” a film Black now calls “one of my favorites of all time.”
Syndrome, who serves as the movie’s primary antagonist, was ultimately voiced by actor Jason Lee — and became one of the most memorable villains in Pixar’s acclaimed filmography.
But Black revealed he was once on track to voice that very character.
When asked about which role he regretted turning down, Black didn’t shy away.
Black Explained the Reason Why He Turned It Down
“I was offered, and I do regret it, saying no… I was offered Syndrome in that fantastic movie ‘The Incredibles’ — one of my favorites of all time, by the way,” he said, explaining that at the time, he didn’t feel fully connected to the character or the director, Brad Bird, whose work Black wasn’t familiar with then.
Black recalled telling Bird that he found the character of Syndrome needed something more and even requested tweaks to the character.
He recalled telling the director, “This character that you’re offering me is like a villain, but he’s kinda one-dimensional. I’m interested but I’d like to see a rewrite. Will you add some dimensions to this character?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, you’re done. Get out of here.'”
“I learned a valuable lesson because when that movie came out, it was one of the best movies ever made,” Black added. “I was like, ‘Why was I being so difficult?!’”
Black’s Impressive Career
“The Incredibles” went on to become a massive success — grossing more than $630 million at the global box office, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and inspiring sequels and continued franchise development over the last two decades.
Its impact on animation and popular culture is widely acknowledged, making Black’s missed opportunity all the more striking.
Despite that moment of regret, Black’s own career has been far from lacking in standout roles.
He became a household name with films such as “School of Rock,” “Nacho Libre” and “King Kong,” and he landed a beloved animated role as Po in DreamWorks’ “Kung Fu Panda” franchise.
More recently, he became a fan favorite voicing Bowser in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” with a sequel set for release in 2026.
Black is also starring alongside Paul Rudd in “Anaconda,” a fresh comedy reboot playing in theaters, which offered the platform for this reflection on past career choices.
