Rick Moranis, 72, Makes Rare Appearance for ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel Reveal

Rick Moranis is officially back—and fans of “Spaceballs” are finally getting the reunion they’ve waited decades for.

The famously private actor made a rare public appearance at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, where the long-anticipated sequel to “Spaceballs” was unveiled.

Moranis, now 72, joined his former castmates to celebrate “Spaceballs: The New One,” marking a major return after years away from live-action Hollywood projects.

All About the New Film

Taking the stage alongside Daphne Zuniga and Bill Pullman, Moranis appeared relaxed and smiling as the trio posed for photos together, according to Deadline

For longtime fans, the moment felt like a full-circle reunion, with the original stars stepping back into the spotlight nearly 40 years after the first film debuted.

The original “Spaceballs” became a cult favorite thanks to its over-the-top humor and unforgettable characters—including Moranis’ scene-stealing turn as Dark Helmet, a parody of sci-fi villains that quickly became iconic.

This time around, the film is blending old and new.

Rising stars like Josh Gad and Lewis Pullman are joining the cast, with Pullman joking about how long it took him to land the role.

“It was a pretty rigorous process, took years. First, I was born,” he said, poking fun at his connection to original star Bill Pullman.

While Moranis’ return is the headline-grabbing moment, the sequel also brings back the spirit of the original through Mel Brooks.

The comedy legend, now 99, appeared in a pre-recorded teaser shown during the presentation, where he confirmed the official title and April 23, 2027 release date.

Staying true to the franchise’s humor, Brooks joked about potential sequel names before revealing he’d already “found the money” after all these years.

He described the upcoming film as “just like the old one, only newer,” before delivering the signature line fans know and love: “I’ll see you at the movies, and may the Schwartz be with you.”

Behind the camera, director Josh Greenbaum is leading the project, stepping in to carry the legacy forward while introducing a new generation to the offbeat sci-fi parody.

It Has Been Years Since Moranis Was in a Film

For Moranis, the appearance marks a meaningful shift.

The actor stepped away from Hollywood in the late ’90s after the death of his wife, choosing to focus on raising his children.

Though he has taken on occasional voice roles since, his presence at CinemaCon signals a rare and welcome return to the public eye.

With nostalgia, new talent, and original cast members reunited, “Spaceballs: The New One” is shaping up to deliver exactly what fans hoped for—something familiar, but with just enough fresh energy to make it feel new.
