Rudy Giuliani is a former New York City mayor and public figure whose personal life—including his marriages and children—has remained in the spotlight for decades. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Rudy Giuliani Has Been Married Three Times
Giuliani’s personal life includes three marriages. His first marriage was to Regina Peruggi, whom he wed in 1968. The relationship lasted 14 years before it was later annulled by the Roman Catholic Church.
He went on to marry Donna Hanover in 1984. Hanover, a television personality, served as First Lady of New York City during much of Giuliani’s time as mayor. The couple separated in 2000, and their divorce was finalized in 2002.
His third marriage was to Judith Giuliani in 2003. The pair divorced in 2019 after 15 years together.
2. The Former NYC Mayor Shares Two Children With Donna Hanover
Giuliani and Hanover had two children during their marriage: Andrew Giuliani and Caroline Giuliani.
The couple met on a blind date in 1982 and quickly formed a relationship. Hanover later described it as fast-moving, telling New York Magazine, “It was a whirlwind. He was smart and interesting. And I wanted children.”
Their son Andrew was born in 1986, followed by their daughter Caroline in 1989. Both children grew up in the public eye during Giuliani’s time as mayor of New York City.
3. Andrew Giuliani Built a Career in Sports and Public Service
Andrew first gained national attention as a kid when he stood next to his dad during the 1994 mayoral swearing-in. He ended up stealing the moment—repeating parts of the oath, making faces, and reacting in ways that people still remember.
As he got older, Andrew focused on golf and played at a high level. As a teenager, he even appeared alongside Tiger Woods in a pro-am event, according to The Golf Channel. He later attended Duke University, where he was a member of the school’s golf team.
After a brief professional golf career, Andrew moved into public service. He worked in the White House in the Office of Public Liaison. Giuliani said of his son’s role, “He’s known the president since he was a baby… they also had a relationship independent of me.”
Andrew married Živilė Rezgytė in 2017, and the couple welcomed a daughter in 2021. He shared the news at the time, calling her the “greatest joy we could ever imagine.”
4. Rudy Giuliani’s Daughter Caroline Pursued a Career in Film and Writing
Caroline went in a different direction, building a career in film and creative work. She graduated from Harvard University with a degree in film production and has since worked with several major entertainment companies.
Her résumé includes roles with Lionsgate Motion Picture Group and work on projects across television and film, including productions for Netflix and HBO.
Caroline has also written publicly about her experiences. In a 2020 essay for Vanity Fair, she reflected on her relationship with her father, writing, “It was disheartening to feel how little power I had to change his mind, no matter how logical… my arguments were.”
Her work now focuses on storytelling within the LGBTQ+ community and topics such as mental health and identity.
5. Judith Giuliani’s Relationship Drew Public Attention
Giuliani’s relationship with Judith Giuliani became highly visible in the years following their marriage. The two met in 1999 and quickly formed a close connection.
Giuliani described the start of their relationship to The New York Times, saying, “Our attraction was instantaneous. There was almost something mystical about the feeling.”
Judith later took on a public role after the September 11 attacks, volunteering to help support victims. During their marriage, the two were often seen at events and were a regular presence in New York’s social scene.
Their 2019 divorce ended Giuliani’s third marriage and closed that chapter of his personal life.
