Golf legend Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover car accident in Jupiter Island, Florida, on Friday, March 27, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The Martin County Sheriff shared an update following the crash in a press conference, revealing that Woods was taken into custody.
Sheriff Update on Tiger Woods Crash
The Martin County Sheriff shared the initial findings following the Florida crash.
“The investigation started and initially, right off the top, it did appear that the driver of the Land Rover might be impaired,” he said.
The crash, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. local time, involved a “pickup truck pulling a pressure cleaner trailer” and a Land Rover. Woods was presumably driving the Land Rover, which was found rolled over on the driver’s door.
According to the sheriff, the pickup truck was slowing down to pull into a driveway.
“The driver of that car looked over in his mirror and saw a dark-colored Land Rover overtaking him at high speeds,” he explained. “Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. They did several tests on him. Of course, he did explain his injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account.”
However, after “in depth” roadside tests, Woods was arrested.
The sheriff explained that Woods was not under the influence of alcohol, but that the golfer refused a urinalysis test.
Woods was charged with driving under the influence, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
No injuries were reported from the crash.
Tiger Woods Returns to Golf
Just days before his terrifying traffic accident, the legendary golfer announced his return to the sport.
Woods made his return to competitive golf on Tuesday, March 24, the final night of the TGL season as he suited up for his Jupiter Links GC. While his team ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Golf Club, the 5-time Masters Tournament champion is aiming for a return to the 2026 Masters.
“I’ve been trying,” Woods told Golf Week’s Cameron Jourdan, according to ESPN. “This body just doesn’t recover like it was when it was 24, 25. It doesn’t mean I’m not trying; I’ve been trying for a while. I’ve had a couple of bad injuries here over the past year, I’ve had to fight through, and it’s taking some time, but I keep trying.”
He continued, “I want to play. I love the tournament. I’m going to be there either way with The Loop [a short course he designed] that’s going up there, as well as the champions dinner. … We’ll see how it goes. I’ll be practicing, playing at home this week and keep trying to make progress.”
Woods is currently recovering from a back surgery he underwent last October. With the Masters just weeks away, it’s unclear whether the car accident will affect his plans.
