Travis Kelce’s future in the NFL remains undecided. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end addressed his retirement status during Wednesday’s episode of the podcast “New Heights,” offering candid insight into where he stands following a difficult 2025 season and a playoff-ending loss. While Kelce stopped short of announcing any formal decision, his comments made clear that both his physical health and personal life will play key roles in what comes next.
Travis Kelce Addresses Retirement on ‘New Heights’ Podcast
During the latest episode of “New Heights,” Kelce joked with his brother and co-host, Jason Kelce, about his current employment status. After calling himself “officially jobless” and saying the podcast is his “only job,” Jason asked whether that meant Kelce had formally announced his retirement.
“This is the only job that employs me right now,” Kelce replied.
The 36-year-old tight end went on to reflect on the Chiefs’ challenging season, which ended with a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 18.
“It ended even worse because my guy 15, Patrick Mahomes, went down,” Kelce said. “We finished the season with a lot of starters kind of banged up. It’s a tough way to go out, especially with the amount of success and the standard that you hold yourself and the team to.”
Kelce described the emotional toll of the season’s conclusion, adding, “You try and look back on it right away and learn from it and even figure out where it all went wrong and how you could’ve been better on certain situations. It’s just a (expletive) feeling. It’s an embarrassing feeling, but you keep it moving.”
The Chiefs Superstar Tight End’s Body Will Decide His NFL Future
As for his offseason plans, Kelce said he intends to spend time away from football before making any decisions.
“I’ll be around some friends and family,” he said, explaining that he plans to “put my feet up” and “be a human” rather than immediately focusing on another playoff run.
Kelce added that he has already held exit meetings with Chiefs staff.
“I talked to a few people in the facility already having exit meetings,” he said. “They know where I stand, at least right now. There is a lot of love for the game still there. I don’t think I’ll ever lose that.”
Ultimately, Kelce emphasized that his body will determine whether he returns for a 14th season.
“If my body can heal up and rest up and I feel confident I can give it another 18, 20, 21-week run, I think I would do it in a heartbeat,” he said. “I think right now it’s finding that answer and seeing how the body feels after this game when it all settles down.”
Travis Kelce Reflects on Past Retirement Talks
Kelce acknowledged that he considered retirement after the previous season but quickly chose to return. This year, he said, the decision feels more complicated.
Following Sunday’s loss, Kelce told reporters the process could take time.
“Who knows?” he said. “It either hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time. Last year, it was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to give this year a shot. We’ll see.”
Kelce completed his 13th NFL season with the Chiefs before the team’s elimination, marking the end of another long campaign for the future Hall of Fame tight end.
Taylor Swift Wedding Timing Could Factor Into Decision
Kelce’s personal life may also influence his timeline. The Chiefs star is engaged to pop superstar Taylor Swift, and reports suggest the couple is planning a late-spring wedding.
According to The New York Post’s Page Six, Swift and Kelce have secured a wedding venue for mid-June 2026.
“Taylor Swift cut a hefty check to snag a bride’s wedding date at a posh Rhode Island venue,” the outlet reported. “Multiple sources tell us that the billionaire pop superstar wanted to marry her fiancé, Travis Kelce, at Ocean House in Watch Hill on Saturday, June 13, 2026.”
The luxury venue is located near Swift’s Rhode Island home. The date is also significant, as Swift was born on December 13, making June 13 her half-birthday.
With Chiefs OTAs typically held in the spring and training camp opening shortly after, the timing could add another layer to Kelce’s decision-making process.
