‘Real Housewives’ Stars Expose the Secret Rules Behind Cast Trips

Cast trips are the crown jewel of Bravo. Whether it is “Real Housewives” or a surprise crossover episode, travel episodes tend to deliver the drama, the meltdowns, and the unforgettable television moments that fans have been waiting all season for. What viewers do not always see, however, is the etiquette and behind-the-scenes planning that go into these group vacations.

From who picks the destination to who gets the best room in the house, Bravo stars say there are unspoken rules everyone follows — or at least should follow. And thanks to newly shared insight from Bravo Insider, fans are getting answers just in time for two new trips coming to the screen: “The Real Housewives of Potomac” season 10 cast heading to Nevis and “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” joining “Below Deck Down Under.”

Here are the “Real Housewives” tried-and-true rules for surviving a cast trip.

The Rules of Hosting a ‘Real Housewives’ Cast Trip

As “The Real Housewives of Potomac” star Ashley Darby admits, hosting a group getaway is not glamorous — it is pressure.

“Hosting comes with a lot of responsibility,” Darby told Bravo Insider. “The standards are very high, and it’s a lot of pressure.”

“The Real Housewives of Miami” star Adriana de Moura shared the same sentiment.

“It’s a lot of responsibility because we’re all very demanding,” de Moura said. “So to get that times nine, it’s a hard job.”

According to Darby, the host’s duties go far beyond picking the location. “You’ve got to make sure the girls have the best accommodations and the best activities planned,” she said.

Emily Simpson from “The Real Housewives of Orange County” insists organization is key. “Inform us on what we’re doing and where we’re going because there’s nothing worse than when you show up and they’re like, ‘You’re going scuba diving,’ and you don’t have the right stuff,” Simpson shared.

Darby also recommends a staple requirement for all trips: “Some cute little goody bags in the rooms.”

Even Lisa Barlow has thoughts on trip prep. “You have to have great invites,” she revealed, adding that first impressions matter — even in group chat form.

The Dos and Don’ts of Cast Trip Etiquette

When it comes to the most infamous Housewives trip issue — room assignments — the stars have learned the hard way: it is not worth the fight.

Darby is still thinking about the chaos from season 1 when she hosted in Bethany Beach.

“I asked Gizelle and Charrisse to share rooms and they threw a fit and tried to find the nearest hotel,” she recalled. “What an introduction to the group.”

Shannon Storms Beador says gifts are fine — as long as they are cleared with the host first. “Just talk to me first,” she said. “Let’s communicate.”

Another universal rule: overpack. “It’s better to over-pack than under-pack,” RHOM star Kiki Barth shared. Meredith Marks agreed, admitting, “I do take several suitcases on a very short trip, but having a lot of options is key.”

And while many Housewives prefer first class, Beador says she can rough it if necessary. “I would be fine with coach in a group,” she said.

The Favorite ‘Real Housewives’ Trip Destinations

When it comes to the most unforgettable cast trips, several cities made the list.

Darby crowned the group’s visit to France during season 3 as her number one. “We climbed a mountain together,” she said. “We were immersed in the culture.”

Lisa Hochstein called her season 3 Las Vegas trip “hilarious.”

“Although it wasn’t all fun, cause these things aren’t always fun, we had some fun moments,” she said. “And it was just really funny to watch. Lea [Black] was there too, and I miss her. I had to share a room with her, and that was hilarious because she’s so different than I am.”

Britani Bateman from RHOSLC said Milwaukee surprised her as a “hidden gem.”

“Interestingly, Milwaukee was so fun — only because I had relatively low expectations,” she said. “I mean, why Milwaukee? But we went to the Harley-Davidson museum, and we did some really, really cool stuff. It was just like a surprising gem in the Midwest, you know? I thought that was fun.”

Meanwhile, Emily loved Key West for the views and the adventure.

“Gina [Kirschenheiter] and I drove together in a convertible, and that drive from Miami to Key West is just insanely beautiful,” she explained. “We did jet skis and the whole thing, so I loved that trip.”
