Meet George Jetson! It’s been 64 years since the head of the Jetson family graced our screens and brought us a look at what life could look like in 2062, and a live-action “The Jetsons” movie is finally in the works. Warner Bros. has confirmed the exciting news, sharing that Jim Carrey is set to take on the lead role.
The confirmation came via a letter to the stakeholders, although there have been talks of the live-action for the last year. The letter also included some updates on other projects, including the long-delayed sequel to “The Batman” and a new “Matrix” movie.

GettyIn recent reports, Carrey is tapped to play the leading man, George Jetson. Considering the character’s fun and positive nature, the movie likely has found the perfect candidate. That is the only casting of note right now.
Colin Trevorrow is tapped to direct the latest live-action release. When word first spread that “The Jetsons” was getting a live-action movie, Joe Epstein was tapped to co-write the script with Trevorrow.
In the stakeholder letter, Warner Bros noted the movie in the list of upcoming releases for the 2027 slate. As the movie is only in the early stages of production with no other cast announced, it is possible that the release could be pushed to early 2028 at this point. It’s not unusual for Warner Bros. to look at its slate more carefully throughout the year, as “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” fans will know with that first season pushed from a 2025 release to an early 2026 release.
There are big plans for 2027 and beyond already. Not only were “The Batman II” and a new “Matrix” movie mentioned, but there are also plans for a follow-up to the “Minecraft Movie,” the new “Lord of the Rings” movie, “The Hunt for Gollum,” and “Man of Tomorrow” from James Gunn. If any production studio can knock out so much at once, it’s Warner Bros.
What Is ‘The Jetsons’ About?
Getty“The Jetsons” took us to the year 2060, showcasing what life could be like for humans. It was originally released in 1962, so this was an idea of how far technology could advance in 100 years, with people literally living and working in space.
It arguably helped to create the world of family animated sitcoms that we know today, setting the bar for “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy,” showcasing a family man, George, who simply wants to do right by his family. He lives with his wife Jane, his children Elroy and Judy, and robot maid Rosie. Of course, nobody can forget about the loyal and lovable Astro, the family dog.
Each episode brings a new challenge for the Jetson family, as they work together to find solutions. There would usually be a B-plot, as with any sitcom, giving the children a chance to learn from mistakes.
Despite now being a beloved sitcom from Hanna-Barbera’s ’60s catalog, it didn’t have major success at the time of release. Unlike “The Flintstones,” which took off as a huge franchise, “The Jetsons” only lasted a season. It didn’t help that the movie had been produced in full color, but as most people still had black-and-white TV sets, they missed out on the beautiful display. It went into syndication in the 1980s, and there was one theatrical film in 1990, remaining animated like the sitcom, but this is the first time fans will get to see a live-action release.
