Mary Cosby is known for bringing sharp one-liners and unexpected comedy to “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” but behind the scenes, her family has been navigating a difficult chapter. Before season 6 premiered, her son Robert Cosby Jr. faced arrest—and now, Mary is opening up about how the situation has ultimately served as a turning point in his life.
In a new interview, the RHOSLC star revealed how the family has been processing the incident, how Robert is doing today, and why the experience may have been exactly what he needed.
Mary Cosby Says Son’s Arrest Was ‘For His Good’
As seen on season 5 of RHOSLC, Mary and Robert had already begun having vulnerable conversations about his struggle with addiction. Although she felt he was improving, his September arrest — after allegedly attempting to enter his father-in-law’s home during a domestic dispute — forced the family into another difficult moment.
Mary told People she now believes the incident was an unexpected turning point.
“It was for his good,” she said. “I think he needed that. He’s never encountered anything like that. He’s never been through anything like that.”
She admitted the situation initially devastated her.
“It hurt me at the time. I was worried; I was scared,” she shared. “But some things happen for a reason to show you the path you’re on.”
Robert echoed that sentiment, telling the outlet he is taking life “day by day.”
“I’m not where I want to be, but I’m certainly not where I used to be,” he said. “I will get there!”
Mary also clarified details surrounding the arrest, sharing that Robert’s wife, Alexiana — who had been staying with the Cosbys — is now living elsewhere.
“They snuck out to be together and got caught,” she said. “So the parents made sure that he [was arrested for trespassing].”
Despite the chaos, Mary believes the separation has helped him refocus.
“It became a blessing in disguise,” she said.
The RHOSLC Star Reflects on Robert’s Addiction Journey
Mary revealed she first learned about Robert’s drug use through direct messages from viewers.
“I was like, ‘What are they talking about?’” she said. “At first, I was clueless.”
Eventually, she confronted him directly — a moment filmed during season 5.
“He just was real and honest, and he told me the truth,” Mary said. “I didn’t judge him. I respected it.”
The RHOSLC star believes his honesty was the first sign he wanted to change.
“When you hide something, you don’t want to change it,” she explained. “If he’s talking about it, it’s because he wants to change.”
As for season 6, Mary teased a highly emotional, dramatic run ahead.
“This year is so amazing. It draws you in,” she said. “I’m proud of all the women — except Britani [Bateman]. I have no reason to be proud of Britani.”
New episodes of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” air Tuesday nights on Bravo.
