The Palusso Family Display

“The Great Christmas Light Fight” season 13 started off with the Palusso family in Carlsbad, California. The family said they “have a passion for lights,” which was clear by how striking and detailed their display was.

Wooden Peanuts characters ice skated while a large driveways matrix of 5,400 pixels showed a dancing Santa and elves. Mr. Palusso said the matrix took two months to put together. Host Carter Oosterhouse said the matrix was “something [he’d] never seen before.”

A Santa figure emerged from the chimney, and Oosterhouse was able to enter Santa’s workshop (which included cookies).

The whole display included just over 300,000 lights and featured both “high tech and traditional” elements, which Oosterhouse cited as one of his favorite parts of the experience.

The Greason Family Display

The second family of season 13 episode one was the Greason family in Parkton, Maryland. Their one acre light display was train themed and featured some elements that were over 50 years old, showing their dedication to tradition. In fact, the family has been creating fabulous light displays for 30 years.

Oosterhouse said the display felt like “an ampitheater” and was particularly taken by the man-made waterfall and pond, around which a model train drove.

There were no wires to be found, despite the massive number of lights. That’s because the Greason family buried the lights under the ground, ensuring both a clean aesthetic and safety for all who visit the display.

Oosterhouse was giving the opportunity to view the display from a rope swing, allowing him to get a “birds-eye view” as he described it.

The Jimenez Family Display

The third and final family competing on “The Great Christmas Light Fight” season 13 episode one was the Jimenez family in Phoenix, Arizona. They’ve been creating Christmas light displays for eleven years; they started out simple but have grown into a “walk-through experience,” according to Mr. Jimenez.

He also described the display as “the biggest little Christmas in Phoenix.” Oosterhouse was impressed by how many different elements the Jimenez family included in their display. “You weren’t kidding, you packed everything in there,” he said.

By “everything,” Oosterhouse was referring to the snowmen, penguins, gingerbread men, and more that donned the lawn. The Jimenez family even included inflatable dinosaurs, a part of their “Gingerassic Park” segment. They also had a segment called “Winterfest,” which is a “celebration of elf culture.”

The display was filled with puns and interesting tidbits about the creatures that decorated the yard.

Who Won ‘The Great Christmas Light Fight’ Episode 1?

The Jimenez family won the first episode! Oosterhouse said their display was proof “you don’t have to have a massive display to have massive creativity.” The family gets $50,000.

Episode 2 – The Irvin Family Display

“The Great Christmas Light Fight” episode two opened up with the Irvin family in San Angelo, Texas. Their display included many handmade elements, including stars and candy canes made out of rebar (and covered in glitter).

The Irvin family keeps their display somewhat similar year after year, but they always add a new element. This year, the new element was a handmade ferris wheel, weighing about 500 lbs and carrying elves along for the ride.

This display had a play-along element: host Taniya Nayak described the experience as a “carnival,” as it had games like corn hole for everyone to participate in.

The Lunar Family Display

The Lunar Family in Willoughby, Ohio showed off a breathtaking display synced to music. Like the Irvins, the Lunars handmade many of their pieces, such as candy canes almost as tall as Nayak. These candy canes were also made out of rebar, but also included chickenwire for the lights to attach to.

The family made a 17-and-a-half ft tall snowflake, rounding out the feast for the eyes.

The Kopatz Family Display

The Kopatz family’s Christmas light display in Riverside, California included a very unique element. In addition to 278 handmade wooden figures, the 36-year-running display also included wooden scrolls. But these aren’t just any scrolls. Each scroll is filled with handwritten names, the names of children who come to see the display.

If a child doesn’t see their name on a scroll, the Kopatz family will add them. The Kopatz couple has written 2295 names on these scrolls, all by hand.

The display also included 58 snowflakes, all standing on top of the roof. In the window on the ground level, audience members could see Santa and Mrs. Claus leaning in for a kiss.
