According to Soaps.com, Lanier is set to star in one of Lifetime’s “Ripped From the Headlines” movies, “I Am Mary Jo Buttafuoco.”

The “General Hospital” actress will play Mary Jo Buttafuoco, whose story gripped the nation back in the early ’90s.

In May 1992, Buttafuoco was shot at close range by Amy Fisher, the teenager mistress of her husband, Joey. At the time, media outlets sensationalized the scandal as Buttafuoco fought for her life in the hospital.

“It’s been 33 years since I was thrust into the true crime spotlight after surviving a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head at the hands of my husband’s teenage lover,” Buttafuoco said in a statement (via Deadline). “In the years that followed, I endured extreme public scrutiny, relentless media coverage, and was often mocked and misunderstood in the public eye. What many didn’t see was the private toll it took—battling depression, suicidal thoughts, and addiction as I tried to make sense of a life that had been so violently and publicly shattered.”

She continued:

“Through my book and my work as a motivational speaker, I’ve been able to share my truth and help others find strength in their own struggles. I am deeply honored to see my life story told from my perspective in this new Lifetime movie. This is not just a true crime headline—it’s my journey of resilience, healing, and reclaiming my voice.”

Buttafuoco serves as the narrator and executive producer of the Lifetime film.

Lanier’s performance as Nelle earned her a Daytime Emmy award in 2018 in the Outstanding Younger Actress in a Daytime Drama Series category.

Aside from “General Hospital,” Lanier also appeared on several shows, including “9-1-1,” “Station 19,” “Army Wives,” and “Law & Order.”

“I Am Mary Jo Buttafuoco” premieres January 17, 8/7c on Lifetime.
