Keep reading to learn more about Joe Hunter’s family, relationship status, career and major achievements, both on and off the “Survivor” island.

What is Joe Hunter’s Relationship Status?

Joe Hunter is currently married to his wife, former WBNA star Kayte Christensen, since 2018.

At the time, Christensen, who formerly played professional basketball for teams like Phoenix Mercury and Houston Comets in the early 2000s until a recurring back injury forced her into early retirement in 2008, was several months pregnant with her first child with Hunter, Jayde.

The pair similarly co-parented Joe’s son, Joseph Jr., who Hunter welcomed in 2013.

“When we met you were already an amazing father. And you trusted me with your most cherished gift JoJo,” Kayte wrote in a 2025 Facebook post about her step-son.

Hunter’s marriage to Christensen suffered a three-year-long divorce, beginning in 2021. Their brief divorce spanned the beginning of Kayte’s career as a play-by-play analyst for the Sacramento Kings, a role for which she later won an Emmy, to Joe’s first appearance on the cast of “Survivor” Season 48.

The couple were later able to reconcile their marriage, however, after attending therapy to learn how to become better co-parents to JoJo and Jayde. They reportedly re-married in February 2025.

“I reconciled with my wife after being divorced for three years,” Joe wrote in an Instagram post uploaded in May of the same year. “We recently had our anniversary and I could not be more proud of us. This is one of the hardest things either of us has done, and it was so worth it. If you’re struggling in your relationship, battling with a possibly divorce or just going through a really hard time, there is hope if you BOTH are willing to make it work.”

What Does Joe Hunter Do for Work?

Joe Hunter makes his living as the fire captain of the Sacramento Fire Department.

The firefighter earned the title following two decades of service to the department and the community at large. His dedication and presence in Sacramento earned him a lot of support when he was announced for the cast of “Survivor 48.”

“His whole career is about serving his community and serving others,” his wife, Christensen, said in a 2025 statement after Hunter successfully passed California Senate Bill 989 – also known as Joanna’s Law, named in honor of his late sister – into law. “And so for us, it was really wonderful to see him in the light, because we know it, but everyone got to see why we think he’s so special.”

Hunter will similarly add “Netflix star” to his resume as he joins the cast of Tyler Perry’s forthcoming firefighter drama, “Where There’s Smoke.” The real-life firefighter will portray a fictional fire captain, Chief Bailey, in the 16-episode series coming to the streaming platform later this year.

“Grateful to @tylerperry @netflix for this opportunity,” Joe wrote on his Instagram Stories when the cast announcement dropped in March. “Just the beginning… Excited for the world to see.”

Did Joe Hunter Go to College Before Playing ‘Survivor’?

Joe Hunter attended the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1999 to 2003, earning a degree in Architectural Engineering while playing Defensive Back for the UCLA Bruins football team.

He similarly participated in track and field for the university, running in events like the 65 meter and 100 meter races. His athletic background came in handy on “Survivor,” earning the castaway an impressive four Individual Immunity challenge wins during his debut season.

Joe Hunter made his “Survivor” debut on the cast of Season 48, where his honor-guided gameplay eventually earned him a seat at Final Tribal Council. Sitting alongside two of his closest allies – Eva Erickson and Kyle Fraser – a 5-2-1 jury vote in favor of Kyle landed Joe with a 3rd place finish.

Over the course of the season, Hunter won four Individual Immunity challenge wins, just shy of the all-time record of five, currently held by a number of former castaways including Cobly Donaldson, Ozzy Lusth, Mike Holloway and Brad Culpepper

During his time on “Survivor 50,” Hunter’s racked up an additional three Individual Immunity victories, and stands to win two more during the season’s upcoming finale. The feat would bring his career total to nine, tying the current record-holder “Boston” Rob Mariano.

If he manages to secure a seat at Final Tribal Council again, Joe’d be the first “New Era” player to do so, and only the ninth castaway in “Survivor” history to achieve the feat.

He’s similarly become the first “New Era” castaway to accumulate a total of 50 days played in the competition, though he’ll likely be joined in the club by both Rizo Velovic and Jonathan Young, who’ll begin the upcoming finale on Day 24, leaving them on their 99th days respectively following their 25-day journeys on their debut seasons.
