‘Golden Bachelor’ Mel Owens Shows Vulnerable Side as He Discusses His Parents & Childhood

“The Golden Bachelor” Season 2 has been a surprising show under Mel Owens‘s lead. Owens’ season got off to a rocky start after comments he made about the ages of the contestants competing for his heart, but he has tried to redeem himself as the show continued.

As Owens’ search for love concludes, fans have been curious to learn more about him and his background, and he comes from a close and loving family. In an interview with Parade, published on October 29, the former NFL player discussed his father, ‘50s professional baseball player Walter Owens, and his mother. Her name is not mentioned in the interview.

Mel Owens Lovingly Speaks About His Parents

“He was my mentor. He was a great dad and great mentor to me, educator, loving. [His history] was pretty unique,” Owens told Parade of his father. Walter passed away on September 20, 2020. He was 87. He continued, “He was a coach and teacher and he taught in the public school system for 20, 30 years and [then] was a professor and coach in college. So just that alone, there was a lot of energy and wisdom there.”

In the interview, Owens revealed that his mother had passed away, and he reflected on her personality and how he sees a similar quality in himself. “My mom was great, a lot of energy, a lot of spunk, and feisty. That’s where I get that from,” he said.

Owens is a divorced father of two. He is also a child of divorce, as he revealed his parents split when he was a child. “They were divorced when I was like 10, 11, or 12, something like that,” he said.

Finding Love on ‘The Golden Bachelor’

The final two ladies competing for Owens’ heart are Cindy Cullers and Peg Munson. Ahead of the finale, fans will be able to watch the Women Tell All episode, which should shed some light on what it’s like to date Owens and share any spoilers about what went on behind the scenes.

For a while, fans were unsure whether Owens had picked anyone or found love. However, his comments suggest he is very happy. Owens teased the ending of his “Golden Bachelor” season and how it was unexpected (MAJOR SPOILER here if you want it). “I think they’re going to love it. It’s unique, and there are some twists and turns in it,” he told Parade.
