‘Bachelor’ Alum Finds ‘One-in-a-Billion’ Egg

A Bachelor Nation alum shared a rare discovery after finding an unusually shaped egg on Easter weekend.

Jade Roper Tolbert, who appeared on season 19 of “The Bachelor,” starring Chris Soules, before winning season 2 of “Bachelor in Paradise,” posted about the find on her Instagram Story on April 4.

The egg appeared perfectly round, something she said she had never seen before—and it all happened over Easter weekend, which the mom of three spent at home with her husband, Tanner Tolbert, and their children Emerson, 8; Brooks, 6; and Reed, 5.

In a video shared to her Instagram Story, Roper Tolbert held up a white egg that appeared spherical rather than oval.

“Have you ever seen a round egg before? I’ve never seen one until today!” she wrote.

The moment appeared to happen while the family was getting ready for Easter at home. In the video, they were gathered around a table decorating eggs with dye and supplies.

She carried the round egg over and placed it back in the carton with the others. It had been decorated like a baseball, with two red lines resembling the seams.

She later shared a screenshot of a direct message she received in response to the post.

“I just looked this up and it said a round egg is a one in a billion occurrence 😱,” the message read.

She responded, “WHAT! That’s crazy!!” She added, “Ok, I just googled this, too! And she’s right!! So crazy. 😧”

Reports Describe Round Eggs as ‘One in a Billion’

Round chicken eggs have been widely described as a “one-in-a-billion” occurrence in multiple reports.

According to the BBC, spherical eggs have drawn attention for their rarity, with some even being sold at auction. One round egg sold for £420 (roughly $554) in Exeter, England, last year, while another previously sold for £200 (about $264) in Berkshire, England, in 2024. In another instance, a round egg found in Essex, England, was sold on eBay for £480 (about $633) in 2015.

The “one in a billion” figure is often cited, but some experts say there’s no confirmed data behind it.

Michael Davis, a University of Florida extension director, said round eggs aren’t typical but noted the odds aren’t confirmed, according to the Ocala StarBanner. An extension director is considered an expert who advises the public on things like poultry, farming, and food-related topics.

“A round egg is considered a malformed or deformed egg,” he told the news outlet in 2015. “In general, these eggs are safe to eat.”

David Holmes, another extension director in Florida, said there is no specific cause behind the round egg’s unusual shape, the outlet reported.

“There’s not something that really causes it. It’s just one of those things,” he told the Ocala StarBanner.

Reports note that malformed eggs can come in different shapes—larger, longer, or uneven—but perfectly round ones are still rare.
