Host Jesse Palmer Details Frightening Moment While Filming ‘The Bachelorette’

Jesse Palmer is opening up about one of the most intense moments he experienced while filming “The Bachelorette,” sharing how a quiet beach visit quickly turned into a situation he wasn’t sure he’d make it out of.

In a recent interview with Parade, the longtime host reflected on the unexpected incident that happened during Season 20 in Fiji, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the risks that can come with filming in remote locations.

A Peaceful Moment That Took a Sudden Turn

Palmer explained that the moment happened after filming a one-on-one date between lead Charity Lawson and her now-fiancé Dotun Olubeko on a secluded island. After production wrapped, he decided to head back to the beach alone for some quiet time.

What started as a relaxing idea quickly shifted when the weather changed.

“But then the storm blew in, and the tide started climbing up onto the beach — to the point where the beach almost got completely covered by the ocean,” Palmer said.

As the water continued rising, Palmer found himself stranded with no immediate way out. “I’m just out in the middle of the ocean, and there’s nothing there,” he recalled. “And I thought to myself, I’m just going to have to tread water and hope a boat comes by and picks me up.”

He admitted the situation became overwhelming in the moment. “I did have some bad thoughts for a moment,” Palmer said. “Like, this is so crazy and ironic if this is how it ends.”

According to Parade, help arrived just in time, with a boat coming to check on him “at the very last second,” ultimately getting him out safely.

From NFL to Reality TV Host

The experience stands out as one of the most intense moments from Palmer’s time with the franchise, which he has hosted since 2021. Before stepping into the role, he had a very different career path.

Palmer began as an NFL quarterback and was drafted by the New York Giants in 2001 before transitioning into broadcasting. He later became the lead of “The Bachelor” in 2004, long before returning years later as the face of the franchise.

Reflecting on that journey, Palmer said he “had absolutely no idea” the show would lead to a long-term career in television, adding that it took “17 years for it to come full circle.”

He also touched on the upcoming season of “The Bachelorette,” which was set to feature Taylor Frankie Paul as the lead. Palmer described her as “an absolute wild card” who brought “unbelievable rawness and authenticity” to the show, noting that she “breaks the format so many times.”

However, the future of that season has since shifted. ABC has reportedly canceled season 22 following controversy surrounding Paul, including domestic violence allegations and a resurfaced 2023 incident, per TMZ.

For Palmer, the Fiji incident remains a reminder of how quickly things can change while filming in unpredictable environments. As he put it in the moment, he was simply hoping “a boat comes by and picks me up.”
