Dick Van Dyke, 100, and his wife, Arlene Silver, 54, celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary by reflecting on their love in a Q&A Instagram video.
While their wedding date is Feb. 29, 2012, the couple shared their adorable video on March 1, where they sat together in bed, playfully discussing how they’ve managed to keep their romance alive despite their 46-year age gap.
“14 year anniversary with my very special guest ❤️❤️❤️,” Silver captioned her post.
Dick Van Dyke Recalls the Day He Met Wife Arlene Silver
As the fan Q&A began, Silver introduced her silver fox. “I have a very special guest today to celebrate a very special day. My husband is here!” she said.
The “Mary Poppins” (1964) actor jokingly reacted to his wife’s introduction by reassuring viewers that his posture while on the bed made him appear much shorter than he really is. “I’m not really shorter, I’m just lying down on the bed,” he said before addressing fans by saying, “Hi, she’s mine!”
While answering questions, Van Dyke shared details about the first time he and Silver met at the SAG Awards in 2006.
“I was sitting in the green room where everybody waits to go on, and the place is full of actors and actresses,” he began. “One thing about Hollywood actresses, they’re pretty heads on stick figures. So I know them in a minute. I was sitting there just by myself; all of a sudden, I see this vision approaching me. No stick figure, gorgeous!”
The actor continued, “And I swear this: I never thought of getting up, I never thought of speaking —[but] I found myself standing on my feet saying, ‘Hi, I’m Dick.’ I don’t know what hit me, but I just did it. I invited her to sit down; we chatted a while — turns out she was a makeup gal, so I hired her on the spot.”
Arlene Silver Teases Husband Dick Van Dyke
While talking about his work in film, Silver teased her husband about outliving the rest of his friends, leaving him unable to do a remake of “The Odd Couple” after Van Dyke’s co-star Ed Asner died in August 2021.
“He’s outlived everybody. That’s the curse of living to almost 100,” Silver quipped as Van Dyke agreed that he has “lost a lot of friends.”
Silver was then drawn to ask the “The Art of Love” actor how he has remained so positive despite witnessing a great deal of his loved ones pass away.
Van Dyke humbly responded, “Well, life’s been good to me. I can’t complain.”
