Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially moved out of Frogmore Cottage in 2023. But their connection to the storied home may be further erased.
According to a story by Fox News Digital, extensive renovations may soon be undertaken to reverse many of the modifications the couple made to the property after being gifted it by Queen Elizabeth for their wedding in 2018. The reported changes could return parts of the residence to a layout more in line with its original design.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Former Royal Residence Could Soon Get a Makeover Back to Its Original State
GettyPrince Harry and Meghan Markle moved into Frogmore Cottage in April 2019, relocating there from Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace in April 2019. The move occurred after the birth of their son, Archie.
The home underwent extensive renovations for the couple to make it their permanent London home base. According to In Style, Frogmore was used as separate apartments by Windsor estate staff members prior to the couple moving in. They subsequently made it one large family home.
PEOPLE reported that the renovations cost around $3M. The renovations, originally paid for by the Sovereign Grant (which is funded by UK taxpayers), were repaid by the couple.
However, The Sun shared new details of the ongoing saga of the couple’s former home. The outlet reported that the property could very well be subdivided back to its original state again. They said, “It will need major and expensive renovation to bring it back to the “pre-Meghan and Harry era.”
A source told The Sun, “It’s been empty for three years. Even Andrew thought it wasn’t good enough for him to move in.”
They continued, “Maybe if they get rid of any trace of Harry and Meghan, then someone within the royal household will fancy it. It would draw the line under Frogmore Cottage’s controversial history and return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era.”
Harry and Meghan Moved Out of Frogmore in 2020 But Kept The Property
Upon choosing to leave their roles as senior royals in March 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also left Frogmore Cottage behind. However, they kept the property as a residence for when they returned to the United Kingdom.
However, Frogmore Cottage remains a part of the Crown Estate, and the couple’s right to use it was based on an arrangement rather than personal ownership. They continued to pay for it and used it during visits to the UK.
ITVX reported that in early 2023, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed they had been requested to vacate the property. The request came on the heels of the publication of Harry’s memoir “Spare.” The royal family did not give a reason as to why the couple was asked to leave their UK home.
The property is said to be vacant at the present time. The royal family has not commented on the status of Frogmore House or any subsequent renovations that would or would not take place at the home.
