The annual Cheltenham Festival’s Hunters Chase is set to be renamed after Princess Anne’s royal title, as a nod to her accomplishments as an equestrian.

Per the press release, the Hunters Chase, also known as the “Amateurs’ Gold Cup,” covers a three-and-a-quarter-mile track.

Now named the “Princess Royal Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Steeple Chase,” this race will take place on March 13, 2026.

According to the event’s website, the Cheltenham Festival is a four-day racing event. The event will take place from March 10 to March 13, 2026, at the Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, England. Princess Anne is a regular visitor to the racetrack.

“The Hunters’ Chase at The Festival is a contest which recognizes and celebrates the very origins of our great sport,” shared Cheltenham Racecourse CEO Guy Lavender in a press release on March 1.

He added, “We therefore feel it is very appropriate to stage it under the name of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal – an outstanding all-round equestrian who has excelled in a wide range of disciplines.”

According to the Royal Family’s official website, the Princess Royal has competed in multiple equestrian events, including European Three-Day Event Championships. She won a gold medal in 1971 as an individual and went on to win silver both as an individual and with her team.

Per the website, Princess Anne was also the first royal to ever compete in the Olympic Games. She participated in the equestrian event at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

Princess Anne has also passed along her love of horses and racing to her daughter, Zara Tindall.

Tindall has become an accomplished equestrian herself over the years. According to Equine America, Tindall, cousin to Prince William and Prince Harry, represented England on the equestrian team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Tindall would win a silver medal in the team event. Princess Anne was the one to present the medal to her.

Equine America also shared that Tindall participated in the World Equestrian Games in 2014, racing for England. She won silver with her team.

According to the press release shared by the Cheltenham Festival, Tindall has been a member of the Racecourse Committee at Cheltenham since 2019, showcasing her commitment to the equestrian world.

The mother-daughter’s shared love of horses stems from the late Queen Elizabeth II. The late monarch, also Princess Anne’s mother, had a great affinity for horses, per Town & Country.
