In November 1985, Princess Diana created one of the most unforgettable royal moments when she glided across the White House dance floor with John Travolta. The 24-year-old princess dazzled in a midnight blue velvet gown by Victor Edelstein, paired with a sapphire and pearl choker, while the Hollywood actor wore a sleek black suit.
Hosted by President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan, the dance became a symbol of Diana’s grace, charm, and legacy. See the iconic Photo:

That unforgettable night symbolized the height of Diana’s fairytale image with Prince Charles, who joined her on the first evening of their U.S. royal tour.
The “Travolta Dress” Becomes Iconic
The Edelstein gown became known worldwide as the “Travolta dress” and went on to achieve record-breaking recognition at auctions. In June 1997, just two months before her tragic death, Diana donated the dress — along with 78 others — to Christie’s for charity.
“Of course it is a wrench to let go of these beautiful dresses,” she told Vanity Fair at the time. “However, I am extremely happy that others can now share the joy that I had wearing them.” The gown sold for $222,500, setting a new record for garment sales at Christie’s.
At the time, the record had been held by another pop culture fashion piece: the white polyester suit worn by Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever,” which fetched $145,000.

“We’re delighted to have acquired this iconic evening gown for the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection,” said Eleri Lynn, curator at HRP, at the time, as per The Daily Mail. “Not only is the ‘Travolta’ dress a fantastic example of couture tailoring designed to dazzle on a state occasion, it represents a key moment in the story of twentieth century royal fashion.”
A Legacy That Still Inspires
For Kerry Taylor and royal watchers, the dress remains powerful not just because of its style but because of the moment it represents.
“Here was this beautiful young woman, dancing with this Hollywood star. She was in awe of him, he was in awe of her. Two beautiful young people, carefree, dancing with the eyes of the world upon them,” Taylor said, as per CNN.
Travolta himself has often recalled the dance as one of the highlights of his life. For many, the gown embodies the magic of that night and the enduring charm of Diana. “There’s still a huge interest in Princess Diana which cuts across all age groups,” Taylor noted. “The interest in the princess is increasing, not declining.”
The “Travolta dress” continues to be more than just fabric — it is a symbol of joy, elegance, and the moments that made Diana unforgettable.
