The Season 29 premiere of “The Voice” brought plenty of surprises, but one of the biggest came when contestant Bay Simpson shared a unique piece of family history: he’s related to rock legend Elvis Presley.
Simpson, a 26-year-old singer from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, explained in his introduction package that his mother’s grandfather’s aunt was Elvis’ grandmother, making the King of Rock ’n’ Roll his distant cousin.
“I don’t know what that makes me, but I’m not making it up,” Bay said. “It’s really cool to be related to the King because I love rock ‘n’ roll. It’s like this spiritual thing that I need to carry the song somehow.”
The revelation instantly caught the attention of fans watching the premiere, which featured returning coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend in a special “Battle of Champions” season format.
Simpson’s Performance
Despite his famous connection, Simpson didn’t lean on Elvis’ catalog.
Instead, he chose “The Waiting” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, hoping to show his own musical identity.
He described Petty as a defining influence on his love of rock music and said stepping onto the stage felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Simpson’s performance kept viewers guessing until the final seconds, when Adam Levine turned his chair just before the song ended.
The dramatic moment earned Simpson a spot on Team Adam and sparked a mix of excitement and curiosity online.
Fans praised his tone and stage presence while debating whether his famous relative added extra pressure—or extra motivation—to succeed.
‘The Voice’ Has a New Twist
Season 29 also introduced new twists, including smaller teams and a strategic “Super Steal” advantage for coaches who land the most three-chair turns.
With only 30 contestants in total, competition is tighter than ever, and memorable backstories like Simpson’s are likely to stand out.
But Simpson made it clear he wants to carve his own path.
Growing up in Muscle Shoals—a city known for its deep music roots—he spent time around studios and musicians, shaping his sound long before stepping on a national stage.
“My mom’s a singer, my step-father is a hit songwriter, my dad’s a drummer, so I was always in studios as a kid,” Bay revealed.
His audition proved he’s chasing a dream built on his own voice, even if rock ’n’ roll greatness runs in the family.
Fan Reactions
Fans quickly took to social media to share their thoughts on Simpson’s performance and his surprising connection to Elvis.
“Crushed it bro!!” one wrote.
Others celebrated him making it onto Levine’s team.
Another wrote, “THAT TONE OF YOURS!”
Whether Simpson’s journey ends in victory or simply a memorable run, his premiere moment delivered exactly what fans love about “The Voice”: talent, surprises, and a little bit of music history woven into a modern stage.
