After a challenging few months, “Jon & Kate Plus 8” star Kate Gosselin is marking a hopeful turning point in her recovery. Gosselin bravely shared an update with fans that she has begun retaking her first steps following what doctors described as a “life-altering” leg injury earlier this fall.
On December 20, “Dancing With the Stars” alum 50 shared the milestone on TikTok as she made her way to a long-awaited medical appointment that would determine when and how she could start walking again.
‘It’s Walking Day’: A Long-Awaited Milestone
“It’s walking day,” Kate said in a December 20 TikTok video as she headed to the appointment. “It’s the day I can walk; it finally came. I’m so excited, I can’t even stand it.”
Once there, her doctor officially cleared her to begin walking again, with strict limits and gradual progression.
“I’m allowed to walk,” she continued. “I have to start at 25 percent, and then 50 percent, 75 percent, 100 percent. So you won’t see me really walking immediately, but I’m excited.”
The video then showed Kate carefully practicing with crutches, gripping a metal bar for support, and beginning intensive physical therapy as she cautiously took a few steps.
‘This Is Gonna Take Longer Than I Thought’
As the reality of recovery began to sink in, Kate was candid about the road ahead. “This is gonna take longer than I thought,” she admitted. “I’m eating my words.”
The moment marked a turning point after nearly three months of limited mobility following the injury she sustained in September.
How the Injury Happened
In September, Kate Gosselin detailed how the accident happened. She said she and her boyfriend, Steve Neild, were walking their dogs when her dog, Meika, suddenly collided with her at full speed.
“My boyfriend threw the ball, and she came running for it, and she was running at the absolute speed of light, and I stepped the wrong way,” Kate explained during a TikTok Live on September 30. “I tried to get out of the way, and she ran into the side of my leg, my knee, at top speed. The only way I can describe it is that it was like a concrete wall running at the speed of light.”
The impact caused her to collapse immediately. “The pain was so bad I just crumbled on the ground,” she recalled.
Surgery, Recovery, and Looking Ahead
GettyKate later revealed the extent of her injuries and the seriousness of her diagnosis.
“I ended up with a tibial plateau fracture and surgery with plates and pins in my leg,” she said. “The surgeon said it was a life-altering issue. That was his opening line this morning at 5 a.m.: ‘So this is one of those things that is a life-altering event.’ I was like, he’s got my attention.”
A few days after surgery, Kate was discharged from the hospital and shared another update with fans.
“I’m finally heading home,” she said in an October 2 TikTok video. “I’ve had pain meds to make the ride more bearable.”
She added, “I can’t wait to go home and see the dogs and get in my bed and take a shower.”
“When I get home, I’m gonna sleep so well, I already know it,” she continued. “Wish me luck, it’s the beginning of the next stage. It’s all hitting me now, getting discharged instructions, hearing all my meds and all the appointments I have to make, and what’s going to happen at my next appointment, and all that. It’s a lot. It’s a little overwhelming.”
Best known for “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” Kate is now focused on healing step by step. While the road ahead remains long, her first steps mark a hopeful turning point in a difficult recovery.
