WCTH Star Shares How 10 Years of Trust Fueled a Poignant Onscreen Moment

For Pascale Hutton, who plays Rosemary Coulter on Hallmark Channel‘s “When Calls the Heart,” Season 13 has been pretty spectacular. Episode 8 contains a scene that was “the most fun she’s ever had,” and several other favorite moments have transpired.

In a conversation with the “Heart in Motion” podcast, Hutton talked about one of those moments and how unexpected it was. “When I read it on the page, it didn’t really pop,” she admitted.

“The Christmas Cup” star explained why she doesn’t think the “nuanced” and “effortless” scene could have happened ten years ago.

Trust and Years of Connection Fuel Rosemary and Lee’s Emotional Scene

In Episode 3 of “When Calls the Heart,” Lee (Kavan Smith) was convinced that McGinty (Kevin McNulty) was responsible for the recent fire. After the two bumped into each other during a heated confrontation, McGinty fell, accusing Lee of pushing him. Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry) had no choice but to arrest him. Rosemary visited him, and the quiet conversation between them turned into an emotionally subtle and poignant moment between the couple.

“That flow and that ease of just one person taking the lead, and then the other person taking the lead,” Hutton explained. “And just knowing that the other person is going to follow you where you go, and then you’re going to follow them. There’s just a trust that builds up over so many years, and it just felt very special when we were doing it.

“It felt like the accumulation of a lot of years of collaboration and connection between not just Rosemary and Lee, but Kavan and Pascale,” she added.

Pascale Hutton Promises Beautiful and Emotional Character Arcs

Along with three-year-old Goldie (Ellie Sweiss), Rosemary and Lee have taken in Gwen (Alex MacIsaac). Gwen’s father is in the hospital after the two lost their home to the fire. Hutton gushed about the young actress and revealed that another of her “favorite moments” of the season involved a scene with Lee and Gwen.

“Lee and Gwen are out back doing the woodworking, and Rosemary kind of peeks through the window and is watching it,” Hutton said. “It was just so amazing to see that Rosemary, at first, is trying to go at it like Rosemary does, and then realizes this is what they need right now.”

She described Gwen’s relationship with Lee as an “easy and natural fit.” Rosemary and Gwen, on the other hand, are similar with their “strong personalities,” so it takes them longer to find their groove.

“It’s a really great story, and I think people will be grabbing their tissues, is what I think,” Hutton said. “When we get to the end of the season, ’cause it’s really beautiful and emotional.”
