WARNING: This post may contain spoilers for Episode 2 of “When Calls the Heart” Season 13
In Season 9 of Hallmark‘s “When Calls the Heart,” Lee Coulter (Kavan Smith) and wife Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) discovered the most wonderful news: she was pregnant. The couple had spent years hoping to get pregnant, and were overjoyed at the long-awaited news.
Since Season 10, Lee and Rosemary have been happily raising their daughter, Marigold “Goldie” Elizabeth Coultier (Ellie Sweiss). However, in a recent interview, Smith revealed that the little family has an additional member in Season 13.
“We have this young lady that we foster in the beginning of the show,” Smith said during a Podcaster Press Junket. “Well, pretty much through the whole season, and she really stole my heart this year.”
So who is this mysterious young lady? We’ve found some clues that may lead to the answer.

“We have a new character that’s on this year,” Smith said. “And the young actress, she’s 14, and Lee and Rosemary foster her. And I have fallen in love with working with this kid. So right now, I kind of just want to do all my scenes with her. She steals everybody’s heart.”
While none of the actors or Hallmark have given a concrete answer about the identity of the girl he is referring to, signs point to actress Alex MacIsaac, who plays Gwendolyn. The Hearties Instagram page posted a photo of Macisaac on Jan. 7. Both Hutton and Smith posted in the comments, with Smith writing, “I’m telling you right now… everyone is gonna be blown away by this kid.”
Parade also posted a sneak peek at Episode 2, airing on Jan. 11. The video shows Nathan (Kevin McGarry) riding into town with Gwendolyn and introducing her to Erin Krakow. We discover that she was separated from her father during the fire, and the frightened girl just wants her dad. We’re guessing that, until she’s reunited with her father, she’ll join the Coulters.

Despite being only 14 years old, MacIsaac has a pretty impressive resume. According to IMDb, she had roles in episodes of “Fire Country” and “The Irrational” in 2024. On Jan. 7, she appeared as Mariel in the Season 3 premiere of the CBS series “Allegiance.”
The year 2026 looks to be even busier. Not only is she appearing in “When Calls the Heart,” but she’s set to star in an episode of “Hollywood Arts” and the film “So Glad You Came: The Musical.” She also has a small part in the upcoming “The Social Network” sequel, “The Social Reckoning.”
While Hearties won’t meet this elusive newcomer until Sunday, Gwendolyn definitely seems like a character we should pay attention to.
