Paul Greene first joined “When Calls the Heart” in 2017 as Carson Shepherd, who was the first physician in Hope Valley. Shepherd was a character that would make more regular appearances on the show over the next few seasons until Greene decided it was time to make his exit from the show in 2021 as part of the season eight finale.
Similar to Chelah Horsdal, who appeared in the first season of WCTH as Sunday school teacher Cat Montgomery before making the choice to leave the show, Greene’s reason for leaving has been a mystery until recently. Sort of.
Greene spoke to TV Insider about his decision to leave in 2022, but it’s recent projects that he’s been in that make the reason clearer. Like many other cast members who left, Greene said that he loved being on the show, but he wanted to be able to have the time to work on other projects, which is difficult as a regular character on a show like WCTH. WTCH is being consistently renewed, having been confirmed to run into 2027 at least. It shows no sign of slowing down with the joy the cast has making the show and the enthusiasm Hearties have watching it.
Paul Greene’s Departure and Reasons
At the end of season eight, Dr. Carson Shepherd left Hope Valley for a surgical fellowship. This keeps open the opportunity for Greene to return to the show, like Lori Loughlin is in season 14, but it also allowed Greene to work on other projects while giving his character a respectable ending.
However, the ability to work on other projects was only half the reason for leaving. Greene also told TV Insider that 2021 was when he was expecting his second son. He decided he wanted to be present for the pregnancy, feeling that this was more important for him than continuing to appear on WCTH, even if he loved the show.
Where to Find Paul Greene Now
You don’t have to look far to find Greene these days, as he’s still a regular actor for Hallmark Channel content. Some recent projects include “Love in the Clouds” where he plays Jared and “Christmas CEO” where he plays Joe Sullivan.
With Christmas quickly approaching, you could design a Paul Greene movie marathon by checking out films like “Timeless Tidings of Joy” where he stars alongside Candace Cameron Bure. There’s also “Bringing Christmas Home,” “Fit for Christmas,” and “I’m Glad it’s Christmas.”
Beyond his acting career, Greene is also a musician. He’s released two albums. One is “Freedom for Your Soul,” and the second is “Long Way Home.” Additionally, he’s writing a book for dads called “52 Ways To Be the Dad You Wish You Had.”
Paul Greene keeps himself busy without appearing on “When Calls the Heart.” While it seems unlikely that he’ll reprise his role as Dr. Carson Shepherd with the other projects he’s focusing his time on, Hearties know that the door is rarely closed completely for a character from the past to make an appearance in a future season.
